If I am reading your previous posts correctly, I don't recall you ever trying to start your engine while you have the oil pressure sensor bypassed.

When you bypass the switch, you say your pump turns on, right? If so, try starting the engine at that point.

If it starts, it either means you oil pressure switch is bad or your engine is not developing oil pressure. That is why I want you to monitor your oil pressure guage to make sure the pressure comes up.

Don,

So what you are saying is that I was wrong to expect to see fuel in the carb if the engine is not running. So the pump may be working after all.

And the switch may be OK also since the engine did not run to build pressure.

I am back to square 1.

Bruce,

June 6 post - I started and the engine ran briefly with the oil press switch bypassed. I know I have oil pressure coz everytime the engine ran for at least 10 seconds, the oil press gauge read 40. So the engine still died, but that time I did not check if the pump was running.

Tomorrow I will bypass again the switch, turn the key to RUN and then "triple" check if the pump is running, if so- then try to START the engine. Maybe my previous jumper was not connected tight.

If engine still dies after this test, what's next? I cannot think about this problem tonight.

Let's do this differently.
Follow these directions exactly.

1. Hook the purple wire and the purple yellow wire from the oil pressure switch together. Do this while the ignitions switch is off.
2. Turn the switch on, do you hear the pump running? If you do start the engine.
3. When the engine starts see how long it will run (you can shut it off after you are sure it's going to stay running)
4. Disconnect the purple wire from the purple/yellow wire.
5. Post your results here.

Re: Cruised for 15 minutes. Then Towed back.

Don,

Test done.

The electric pump was running with the key switch on Run. I primed the carb, and started the engine. The engine ran for about 12-15 seconds. Then died.

Tried again - the pump was running, the engine ran for about 12 seconds then died.

Same story for the third try.

In all 3 instances that the engine ran for 12 seconds, I looked at the inside of the carb to check if there were any fuel activity. The inside was dry, really dry. No gas, no fuel squirting. Was I supposed to see fuel in motion, or any at all?

What's the verdict???

Can I remove the end of the fuel line that connects to the carb and run the pump to see if any fuel will come out? Does this make sense?

I don't know if this wil be helpful or not, but my boat did this once (4.3L VP) and it turned out to be some part of the alternator that supplies the voltage to the fuel pump once the starter circuit stops. The alternator still was putting out good voltage, but not to the starter. Have you tried to wire the fuel pump directly to your battery?

There is no question that the pump is getting power. It ran in all 3 tests. No need to do altrernative power source.

What I need to find out now is -

1.why was there no gas in the carburetor.

2. Can I disconnect the fuel line on the carb and turn on the pump to see if fuel is being pumped.

Anyone????

"Can I disconnect the fuel line on the carb and turn on the pump to see if fuel is being pumped."

Pumping a bit of fuel from the line into a container is pretty much a standard test for checking fuel pump performance.

Be careful... flaming gasoline can ruin your whole day.

Ok, the pump runs. Now lets find out if you have fuel to the carb. Keep the wires on the oil switch hooked together, this keeps you from having to run the engine to do the other tests.
Disconnect the line going to the carb, put a hose on it and put the hose in a container and turn on the ignition switch to the run position, DO NOT start the engine. Did you get gas coming out of the hose or not? If you did get gas, you are going to have to do a pressure check on the fuel pump.
You will need to make fittings and hose to a fuel pressure gauge to do this. DO NOT cut the steel line from the fuel pump to the carb.
While you have the fuel line off, make sure the filter in the carb is clean.

Just curious, is it possible there is a blockage in the line? Anywhere from the pickup in the tank through to the carb.

Would it be possible to get enough gas at a trickle to start and run for 10 sec then starve after that in this condition?

Betting it's a bad fuel pump or restricted fuel line from the tank... clogged pick up screen.

Test completed.

With the fuel line disconnected from the carb, a lot of fuel came out of the line (from the fuel pump). So the pump is working. The drum-like fuel filter at the carb inlet was not blocked, was not installed backwards, it was ok.

Next test will the to test the pum for pressure. Gotta go to autosupply for the gauge and tee fitting.

Will keep you posted.

Question - The manual says that the engine should be running to test for psi. But the engine only runs for about 10 -12 seconds. Is this enough window time?

Babylon,

I am from New Hyde Park. Thanks for the offer. It seems that I must some basic equipment in hand since I will have a boat for as long as I can imagine. I hope this is less than $40.

Another thing you might try before you get the gauge is see how long the fuel pump will pump fuel (15 second test). Still using the wires from the oil switch hooked together. See if the fuel pump will keep running for over 15 seconds and pump fuel into a container.
