Ok - will test the pump for 15 seconds. I need a bigger container.

I am still waiting for the marine store to call me back if they have the pump and the tee fitting. Five auto supply stores did not have the fitting and correct size.

The fittings going into the carb and fuel pump are 3/8" reverse flare. Even a steel brake line cut in half will give you the fittings and a place to clamp the hose. The tee can be made up from a regular pipe tee with hose barb to pipe fittings of the correct size.
Maybe my HIGH quality drawing will help.

I just ran the pump for 20 seconds and it ran for 20 seconds. I noticed a decline in fuel flow after 15 seconds.

Terrific improvisation. Now let me digest it. Even the marine store does not have the fitting.

Can I do the pressure test without hooking to the carburetor and running the engine? I am talking of just connecting the gauge to the end of the steel fuel line, and then run the pump? Would this not give me the same results? Or maybe even higher psi since the fuel is blocked.

Not easy to copy the drawing of Don. The end of the steel pipe has a small round male end, and then the carb inlet has a very wide female diameter. I need to find something to reduce the carb inlet to the size of the steel pipe.

You aren't going to find a "Special Fitting" to do like I showed in the drawing.
Go to NAPA and get a steel 3/8" brake line. It has the proper fittings on both ends. Cut off each end about 3" long so you can hook one end in the carb, the other end in the fuel pump. Then use hoses to get to a tee. The tee is made up of different sized fittings. Get off the computer and go find them. Hardware stores have the parts. The parts stores people won't build one for you over the phone.

"I just ran the pump for 20 seconds and it ran for 20 seconds. I noticed a decline in fuel flow after 15 seconds."

Hello
When the motor quits...does cough, sputter
miss, or just quit like turning the key off?
Have you checked the carb for the presence
off gas? After it quits... hand advance throttle
while looking down carb... should see 2 streams
of gas squirting. Should feel/hear pump..pumping.
I find it hard to understand the motor being fuel starved when the fuel pump runs for 20 sec
and the motor for 15. I would think the fuel in
the carb bowel would let it idle for 30 sec.

When you tested fump for flow,(above)
what does you mean..Decline in flow?

It seems that you are "stuck" thinking its
a fuel problem yet you have not checked for
fuel in the carb/bowel when it dies. It is either there or it isn't.

Don - it took me 3 hours today to get the improvised materials and the gauge. MOst gauges here are for EFI. I hope the engine runs for 15 seconds so I can get the psi reading. Will post results.

Wildlife-let me finish testing the electric fuel pump for proper and consistent pressure. Decline means the rate of flow was reduced. But this was looking with my eyes. A pressure test will be accurate.

Yea, but after 2 days of phone calls you had nothing. Now, which was the best way to go????

You should be able to check the pressure without running the engine. As long as the pump is running, it doesn't know if the engine is running or not.
If the flow of gas is slowing down after a few seconds of running, I would bet you have something partially plugged or an air leak in the boats fuel system, may not be the fuel pump.
Here is a way to check that also. Using the same parts you just purchaced, only arranged different.

http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=24;t=015221

Test complete.

Ran the pump for 20 seconds - gauge 5psi, then 7psi.

Ran again for 20 seconds - gauge is 7psi steady.

Both test without engine running.

It now must be the carburetor.

Don't you wish it was that cut and dry?

Now, run the engine while watching the gauge and see what the gauge does when it starts to die and finally dies.
One question, do you use the throttle at all to try to keep the engine running.
If you are trying to keep this engine running at idle only, it may not happen. For reasons other than carb.

Re: Cruised for 15 minutes. Then Towed back.

Don't we all want it to be as simple as running our tow truck? No problems for the first 75,000 miles? We wish.

Test complete.

Ran the engine for 12-15 secs. The gauge read 7psi steady. Same 7psi on the second. Used the throttle- still died within same period.

In both instances and like previously, the carburetor has no gas spraying or fuel being dumped. I even put my finger to see if my finger will get some gas.Nothing. What's the likely cause of this? I went to see the mechanic at my gas station and they said I am supposed, when looking at the throat of the carb while the engine is running, to see spray of gas, and a hush of gas as you put more throttle.

Since we can rule out a defective electric fuel pump, which was tested to eliminate lack of fuel supply, then the next in line forward is the carburetor. Time to take it down and follow the manual for rebuild?

Babylon - The gauge cost me $30 and the rest for the hose, fittings, etc, another $15. Not bad compared to buying by mistake a new pump.

The multiple posting to Babylon was not intended. I clicked several times coz my computer was not responding.

It wasn't just you, I had problems at the same time. Obviously the whole system went bonkers for about a minute. I almost clicked a second time, but didn't.

Not bad.........just trying to help.

Do you trailer or keep the boat in the water?

Where do you go out of?

Babylon - I have it on trailer. Launches in Wantagh Park. Today has been really windy. At least I did not miss a day of boating.

Don - thanks for your patience on the fuel pump testing. It was very educational. And I have made myself a new toy - the pressure gauge for a carb. What a full day of driving to autosupplies and up and down the beast, rather boat.
