I know the feeling of being frustrated. Yup, very windy today. Hoping to get out early tomorrow for some bass.

What carb do you have? Is it a 4bbl?

It must be 2 barrels. The engine is 5.0L.

Any more possible diagnosis before I remove the carburetor tonight?

If only I had a friend who has a carbureted car so I can see for myself what activity is happening when the carb is operating. Right now, my conclusion from looking at it is no gas is entering the carb.

I think a 5.0 could be a 4bbl.

Can you post a pic?

If I were you I would disconnect the cable from the throttle linkage and, with the engine OFF, operate the throttle linkage by hand and look down the carb. You should see 2 strong streams of gas shooting downward into the carb as you "pump" the throttle.

If you don't see any fuel I would pull the carb.

Is there a filter where the fuel line connects to the carb?

Yes, there was a filter at the end of the fuel line, connected to the carb. The filter is shaped like a drum, closed on one end. The filter is clean and not torn. I will check for gas streams. I will also try to take pix.

Milkyway says
"I went to see the mechanic at my gas station and they said I am supposed, when looking at the throat of the carb while the engine is running, to see spray of gas, and a hush of gas as you put more throttle."
When was this?
Babylon boater suggests it and you agree.
Priceless.......

Which end of the filter is facing the fuel line?

Merc didn't use 4bbl carbs in 99. You do have a 2bbl carb. But since you don't know the difference between a 2 bbl and a 4 bbl carb, my suggestion is to get it rebuilt by the pro of your choice.

Wildlife - it was late today after I have completed the fuel testing.

Babylon- the closed end of he filter is facing the stern, bumping against the spring. It's been there since I bought the boat 04. And Yes Yes Yes - 2 streams fuel squirt when you advance the throttle. Now what?

If you have streams of fuel in the carb.........I would guess it's not fuel related.

How about the ignition?

The 3 dollar carb filter is at least 2 years old and i can tell you right now it can LOOK fine and be quite CLOGED with stuff so fine you cant see it

When you change it put in a glass jar to dry out and then watch all the stuff that flakes off it :(

Been there done that boat died and I have had to pull mine out on the water to get home it gets changed EVERY YEAR now :)

It could easly starve the carb for fuel no matter how it looks

There warning NOT to look down the carb when the motor is runing ,when it has problems like this its real easy to get a backfire and burn the crap out of your self

tommays

Can you please double check me on this - When the engine ran for about 12-15 seconds, in all 3 instances, with the fuel pump verified to be pumping 7psi steadily, there was no fuel squirting or spraying inside the carb. Was this OK or not? If not OK, then something else is wrong in the fuel distribution system. Can you please confirm this?

I have not looked at the carb before when nothing was wrong, so now I don't know what to expect to see inside. Except for what the mechanic told me today.

Tommays - the filter cannot be the issue coz I have removed it towards the final leg of the fuel pump testing. I have a brand new and I have not installed it yet.

Well the fuel mist from the idle circut is going to pretty fine and hard to see

SO when it stops IF you pump the throtel and the ACC pumps squirts gas i would say there is fuel in the carb

tommays

tommays - you're saying that it may be normal for me not to see anything in the carb while the engine is running. I am having a headache.

This is key:

"SO when it stops IF you pump the throtel and the ACC pumps squirts gas i would say there is fuel in the carb"

Re: Cruised for 15 minutes. Then Towed back.

I like the test of operating the throttle after the engine died to see if the accelerator pump stil squirts gas. I see a couple problems with that in that it is possible that:

1)There might be some gas in the throttle pump circuit still.

2)Possibly the float chamber ran out of gas because of a dirty seat of the float valve. The fuel pump might have already started partially fill the float chamber with gas so that it appears that there is gas in the float chamber.

3)Same reason as 2 but because of the carb inlet filter.

Been awhile...how long should an engine idle with just the amount of gas in the float chamber?

I wonder if you let it sit 10 minutes with the pump running, would it start again and run for another 15 seconds?

Bruce - you want to me run the electric pump for whole ten minutes and then restart? Doesn't that seem too long?

Backfire and no eyebrows? Neither is desirable.

Anyone knows how to check the electric choke for proper function? I have TB V ignition.
