Kind of a loaded question with no definitive answer. In general, the heavier the boat/wider the beam the better it will ride. It would also help to know if you will be trying to tow it, or leaving it in a slip as the size contraints can pose a problem. Lots of variables here.

I have a 24 ft pontoon boat that carries 14 people and I use it in the Chesapecke Bay. Give it a thought.

Keep in mind that on the bay we mostly just get chop - not that it can't get nasty. Lake Michigan can get some serious wave action if the weather kicks up.

If you want a bowrider, this is the boat for you, or the 280 Sundeck. I only suggest this boat because I see one here in Seattle every day and the layout/power is amazing with the twin engines.

I'd get both lol. When the hotties are in their suits, tell'm u only have the open bow and they can ride up front. When it's the step parents, tell'm you only have a cruiser and then lock them in the cabin lol.

I have never boated out of Petoskey. I've been there on shore. From what I gather there isn't much for "protected" water to boat on days that the big lake is too kicked up.

The reason I asked is if you are looking for a good riding boat, I was curious to know if all of your boating would be on the big lake or one of the many inland lakes connected to Lake Michigan. If you are looking just for the best riding boat in the 32' class, a bowrider or a cruiser may not be the only thing to consider. In fact if all you are looking for is a smooth ride, a "go fast" may actually be the best. The narrow beam to length ratio and typically a stepped hull will ride through 3' chop with relative comfort. Something like a Baja, Fountain, or a Powerquest (if considering used) or even a Formula may be something to consider.

The new Tiara 3100 Coronet seems to offer the best day cruising capacity with a nice cabin for 2 to overnight. I am strongly considering this boat for my first boat on Lake St Clair. It provides massive entertaining space and a nice dry ride, when anchored you can catch the rays on the front deck. Check it out.

I would stick with a cruiser, I boat on Lake Huron and the waves can come up quick and they will kick your @$$ in a hurry, I would much rather have the closed bow when it gets rough. The in-land boaters have no idea what big waves are, We had over 20'ers 6 or so weeks ago. (no I was not in them) - Heck I believe there has been a small craft advisory for 3 of the last 4 weeks. I would kill for an in-land lake near by.
