Cuddy issues Volvo v8

I have a 89 Berretta Cuddy w/volvo v8. When I launch in fresh water I have a steady stream of water leaking down from my bell housing. I have launched it twice now in fresh water and with in 30 minutes and the bilge pump off I have about 2-3 inches in my bilge. I have launched once in salt water and after about 4 hours had about an inch in the bilge.

The previous owner did not winterize the boat and when I bought it it had a cracked block and heads. I have since replaced the block, tried to braze the heads shut.

It could get it to run in salt water but never fresh. I later found out that I had really low compression on 3 cylinders. #3 had 145, #5 had 45, and #6 had 45. I am guessing that is a large part of the reason why I could get it to run in the driveway but not on the water.

I am getting a different set of heads this week to drop in and I hope that will take care of the not wanting to run on the water issue. I do not believe we have any issues with the block since I was not burning any oil.

I need help trying to locate the leak that is comming out of the bell housing. I am hoping that the exhaust manifolds did not get cracked as well and is causing this leak. Volvo parts are getting pricy. I have replaced the exhaust bellows and universal joint bellows. I was thinking of taking the engine out and backing it into the water to see if I could locate any rogue leaks, or just backing it in when I have the intake and heads off during that replacement.

Any ideas on how to locate this leak?

Also do you think that the low compression would cause me not to run on the water?

If the water is leaking in through the bellhousing, then your bellows is bad letting water into the flywheel cover (aka the bellhousing) going through the bearings and into the bilge.
You really need to pull the engine and replace the seals and bearings in the flywheel cover, along with pulling the upper gear box and replacing the ujoints, bellows, and the seal and sealing washer in the upper gear box.
You probably have milky oil in the outdrive, and I would bet money when the engine is running there is a lot of growling going on behind the engine.

You've just got to get your head down in there and find it. Could be various spots it could leak from. Dry it off good and run it. Does it come in when the engine is off? Only when running. Find out where its leaking and we'll help you fix it.:)

Nice to see a fellow baretta owner.

Who knows about the compression issue. You should have replaced the long block to begin with.

Let us know what happens.

It leaks both when running and when off. I had the upper gear housing off when I replaced the bellows, was quite a pain to get it back into place. And yes when I have it running there is quite a bit of growling going on.

You REALLY need to go up to the Adults Only sticky at the top of the forum (Second thread) and look at item 11, the Volvo information thread. It covers about everything you are about to get into,.
