hey guys,

Been remodeling/rehabbing and old family boat this winter. Just about finished. Was working with the trim and tilt assembly last couple of days(wasn't working) As it has been very cold here this winter, my assumptions and guidance from local shop were to manually actuate then top off the hydraulic fluid.

While manually moving the motor I heard a "poof" then a small plume of smoke come out. I removed the cover and found this wire had burned through. Not sure what it is. 20140325_164808.jpg

I have a closeup but the upload keeps failing....

Anyhow, the TT ended up working fine after being topped off, then bled. Just not sure what this wire could hinder me finishing my project.

Thanks guys.

Re: curious wire

I believe that is a bonding connection. And you probably have a loose or missing ground wire somewhere in the TNT wiring.

What Mariner motor and serial number are you working on?

Re: curious wire

Thanks for the quick replies.

How dire of a piece is that wire?

Would that happen even though I was manually moving the motor opposed to pressing the power switch?

I plan on removing, sanding/cleaning, and replacing all connections in the coming days.

I don't know what size the wire should be, you might look at the lugs under the bolt heads and guess some. It appears to 12 or 14 gauge, but I'm guessing.

Tilting the motor manually shouldn't cause that because no power is going to the tilt pump. Since it happened while you were manually moving the motor, I can only think maybe the tilt wiring harness could be frayed and shorting. Again guessing at that. Examine the harness closely.
