Cushion foam?

Getting ready to rebuild the seats in my boat. The back bench-style seat was totally shot so I'm, building a new plywood frame, new foam and vinyl. Any opinions on which foam to use? I found some 3" thick polyurethane foam at a decent price but wanted to see what other options there are.

There are so many different types and density/compression level of foam on the market, that I would contact a upholstery shop in your area and ask them their recommendation of what type to buy. There are on these forums that may answer your questions as well because there some very nice seat rebuild pictures too. So either way you will get some more info... Good luck and post your pictures before during and after for us to see. We love pictures..

I just started this process myself! One of the guys on the Forum mentioned Fabricdirect.com for material. Good resource, good quality, good price. Shipping was kind of steep, but even so, it was WAY CHEAPER than any fabric supply stores locally. Better rated Vinyl too! Definitely use marine grade fabric. The foam was the big shocker! It was nearly $50 per yard at the craft/fabric stores! And then I searched Amazon... WHEW! You can practically steal it! I would recommend 3" high density foam. I was finding rolls at 24" x 72" for $22-$32 on Amazon. (Murano Home Furnishings i think it was) My upholster guy just started today, and was very pleased with the materials I hunted down.

Ayuh,..... 3" foam ain't much good, if ya need 2" ,..... Design yer new seat to see whether ya want for thickness,....

Many seats are foam blocks, sculptured, 'n glued,....

Back when I did the tinbarge interior, I used this stuff in 1, 1/2" for the cooler seat cover/ cushions,....
I Love 'em,....
Covered with sunbrella, held down with snaps, 'n velcro, they're as comfortable today as they were 15 years ago when put in on the 2nd set of coolers,...
When I got to the helm seat, I figured 3" would be more comfortable,.....
Nope,.....
The cushiness ain't no better than the 1, 1/2" stuff, 'n I sit too tall,...

On the plus side, they hold ZerO water, 'n can be used as personal flotation, when necessary,....

that's because iboats considers the company a competitor and has blocked out the name in the link

The original broken link wasn't an iboats blocked link, in the www.***********.com format, it's was gibberish. Like the linked site was scrambling their web address to prevent linking from a public forum. I've had clickable hot links not work before, esp if the link points to a page other then the main homepage of an online retailer. The retailer WANTS web traffic to land on their homepage, view what they want you to see on their homepage, then click and page thru to whatever product you're looking for. Not unlike certain sites putting

I kinda figured as a MOD Bondo was well aware of the competitor blocking by iboat's servers, and there was some other problem w/ his link, which prompted my post.

NOW it is blocked by iboats as a link to a competitor's site.

Ayuh,.... My bad,..... It's a closed cell foam, like used in the foam/ vinyl covered Pfds used for water skiin',....

Googlin', "Polyplastics MicroCell Closed Cell Foam" will find many outlets for it, other than Defender Industries,...

Sorry 'bout that,.....

The reticulated foam looks great, but close to $600 just in foam for my bench seat and sun deck, ain't happening. I'm pretty picky about keeping my boat dry on the inside and plan on covering the foam with plastic before the vinyl goes on.

Bondo, this is a back bench seat. The old original foam I'm measuring 3" in the thickest areas. I agree 4" would be too thick though. I'm deciding on materials and a redesign of the seat, will post some photos in my resto thread link in my sig.

Ayuh,.... No doubt it's more expensive, I'm just pointin' out, there Are options,....

If ya redesign the structure, ya might get away with a 1" foam coverin', insteada 3" foam,.....

Free couches on CL, keep the cushions, junk the couch

I might have taken just the cushions from a couch at the curb already on garbage pickup day :watermelon:

Admittedly those ^^^ were for my students to use on the roof while I taught shingling :D

I'm surprised WOG didn't chime in w/ the CL couch cushions.......
