I need a winter cover for my boat. I am thinking about getting one made.

The one I am thinking of is made of sail canvas. It is a very heavy durable canvas. My one concern is how heavy nad durable it is. Will it scuff/rub the gel coat if there is any movement in the cover? Has anyone had a similar one made up?

It is heavier and more coarse than a typical weaterproof cover.

The reason for having one made is basic cost. At close to $100 for a 20 X 30 tarp that only lasts a single year or a custom made one that will last multiple years at an estimated cost of $300 the math makes sense. he cover on my last boat was 11yrs old when I sold the boat. I expect this one to last close to the same amount of time.

Are you talking real canvas or nylon? Most modern sails are nylon. I don't believe sails are truely waterproof without being treated.
Many years ago I had an OEM cockpit cover that was vinyl-coated canvas. It worked fine but was very heavy. Also, the vinyl would crack if I tried to fold it in cold weather.
IMO the synthetics (Sharkskin, Sunbrella) are 100% better and worth the cost.

Re: Custom made boat cover

I am talking real canvas. Someone I know had a cover made for their RV, but they had to stop using it because it was causing te paint to be scuffed off where there was some slack in the cover. When the wind blew any area that had some slack would flap and cause some of the paint to be scuffed off.

I am thinking the same may be an issue unless it is fitted properly and can be tightened down to prevent this.
