Re: Customers Lying. Why?

Right. Most boats are pretty sophisticated pieces of machinery these days. Yet, too many new owners don't read anything about their new boat. They don't take a boating class. They figure it's just like the new Lexus they just bought...turn the key and head out.

Heck, it's just a boat. Dad and Grandpa had one they use to go fishing in. How much difference could there be? Todays large outboards are just like car engines, except they're being run the way no car engine would ever be run unless you're racing. Computers, injection, even superchargers. Yet...folks launch, then put the hammer down all day, reload and park the thing back at home. A lot of boat owners have never had the cowling off their engine.

They hear warning alarms, but have no idea what they mean, since they never bothered to read the owner's manual from the engine manufacturer. So, they just keep going until they stop with a busted engine, then whine about it. Heck, they don't even know how many cylinders their engine has.

It's amazing. It's alarming. It's darned expensive for such boaters.

Well because the dealers like car dealers lie to get more money?

Well because the dealers like car dealers lie to get more money?

Only dealer thats worth a snot in my area infiniti dealer i used back in early 90's and bmw dealer thats it. Toyota, chev try to get all my money and lie. Heck with 15k on my new malibu i had to pay for new brake bulbs, brake rotors, pads. My 2003 corolla has had a problem with the shakes bad when going over uneven pavement. I told the toyota dealer two years ago and spent $400 they couldnt find a problem. I just other day went to pepboys had them get it in air for free and played around with the control arm well he said everthing good. I said wait it has to be a problem with the arm i already replaced a perfect strut myself so thats not it. Turns out the rear bushing in the arm was bad with a crow bar he got the whole wheel to move over an inch back and forth. So camber, caster, tow in was changing all the time scary lol. I ordered all new parts from autozone energy suspension polys hope this will fix that. Any mecanic that says its the alignment is right and wrong but the fix isnt doing an alignment lol its replacing the bad or bent parts hehe.

Re: Customers Lying. Why?

Try this one on for size (I'll be brief):
1) Neighbors boss buys my glass outboard runabout.
2) couple months later neighbor stops by and asks if transom was bad on that boat. Answer = No. (He had ridden and fished from it).
3) States that transom broke.
4) Neighbor lined up the repair for boss.
5) A month later stops by with boat in tow to show me the repair.
6) Nice job I reply. Motor is not installed and is laying in boat.
7) Who was driving I asked. Bosses son was the reply.
8) I ask, did son hit anything. answer = no.
9) I reply -- then why are all three prop blades folded over.
10) End of conversation.

Re: Customers Lying. Why?

I used to service sophisticated security and surveilance systems that were installed in most of the major financial institutions in the country. I have been all over central and south america, the caribbean and Florida doing this work. No matter where I went, asking the customer was always the quickest way to get an idea what happened.
As a service tech, it is really important that I know what was happening before somthing broke.
Before closed circuit video, we just had to take them on their word. However, after video showed up I would always meander over to the equipment, rewind and have a look at who was doing what.
It was amazing to note how so many of the stories changed from " well, I know nobody was near it" to " oh, I see Jane must have been having a bad day"! :p
So much for human nature, never having to admit a wrong or taking ANY blame for anything that happens.

Re: Customers Lying. Why?

Silvertip's story reminded me of one from years ago. A customer came in with broken upper motor mounts on a '69 55hp that was still in warranty. The customer trailered the boat in and the whole family gathered around as I inspected it.

Mounts almost never break so I asked if they had hit anything. "Of course not," the man replied, but then the young kid piped up and said "What about that log you ran over, Daddy?" You should have seen the different shades of red that colored the old man's face!
