Cuts off when hooked to gas tank????

1988 Evinrude - 40hp

Motor sat for two years. I cleaned the carbs already. New gas.

I primed it until primer bulb is hard but it wont start unless I unhook the gas line. Once I unhook the gas line it will crank after about 10 tries and run until the gas in the motor is gone. I have re-attached the gas line while the motor is running and it will cut off. If I pump the bulb - nothing - it just cuts off.

I need some help!!! My wife is itching to go out on the boat.

is the vent on the tank open?

The vent is open.

Noticed a little bit of gas leaking from the gas line and carb connection....has a small spilt/crack in the line where it connects to the carb. Would that be enough to stop the motor?

That would kill the one cylinder but I doubt it would kill the engine. You do realize what your reporting makes no sense! Weird that it will run on gas in the bowls but not when connected to a tank. Does it quit as soon as you connect your tank or does it run for a bit and then quit? Best fix that cracked fuel line in any case. Best of luck. Rick.

Cuts off as soon as I connect to the gas tank. it makes no sense at all to me either. I'm going to try a different tank and fuel line and see if that helps

Well might be that it's flooding bad but can't flood when you're not allowing it enough fuel (tank disconnected). Have you pulled the plugs after a stall to see how wet they are? Rick.
