Hello, I have an 84 merc 140 in a searay, problem is the engine starts cutting out and backfiring once you reach 2500rpm. It starts/runs perfect up to that point. Previous owner updated the ignition, so no points, cap rotor etc... all new. While doing so he did cross plug wires, that is correct now. If you choke the carb after it is warm engine dies so thinking not a fuel issue? Im guessing it is out of time but not sure, that is one thing ive never really delt with. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance! (this is happening on trailer in or out of gear)

What you describe it Classic Syptoms of Fuel Starvation at higher rpms......

Possibly the Carb's High Speed Circuit is Plugged......

You need Merc manual number 3 and it will cover your carb rebuild.
However, it's not online, might give ebay a try.
