Does a power pack usually go out this way? More than one primary dieing at the same time. I have not heard of that before.

Power packs have all sorts of different actions , some just go out with no warning, some while running and others just never start again after shutting them off. Some will develop a miss prior to final failure.

Powerpacks dies for various reasons.
Use of 'R' plugs (NGK)
Bad ground
Engine overheating
Shorted coils

Could the rectifier have any affect on this problem? What is the best way to check a rectifier on a 1989 120hp johnson?

Is your tach working?
Charging 13,8-14.8 Volts?
Rectifier ok.

Of course right now the motor is not running. Last time I used it the tach worked fine. It sounds like I need to get a new power pack. Thanks for all the help.

Installed new powerpack engine runs. YEA, Another problem the warning horn is going off in short bursts. BEEP BEEP BEEP pause then that all over again. Checked the manual it says no oil. This motor was smoking plenty and the sight tube had oil going through it. Any ideas?

plug off the oil line and premix, then unplug the vro wires. or shuck out $400 + for a new vro pump.
you could unplug the vro wires to test and make sure that is where the signal is coming from. I would premix anyway till you get it fixed..would suck to damage your motor because of low/no oil. double oil will not hurt anything.

Found water in the bottom of the oil tank. Pumped it out no more beeps.
