I haven't found the story on the net yet, but just heard on the radio that the Cutty Sark was destroyed by fire. It was drydocked and under major restoration. Sad day for maritime history ... and whiskey drinkers I suppose.

Re: Cutty Sark Gone

While certainly a disaster, all is not lost. The Cutty Sark will rise again!

Chris Levett, the chairman of Cutty Sark Enterprises, said that while the ship's decks were "unsalvageable", the damage did not appear as bad as originally feared.
At least half of the ship's infrastructure and all the artefacts normally on board were not at the site at the time of the fire.

Chris Livett, chairman of Cutty Sark Enterprises which is repairing the clipper, said at the scene: "From where I stand there is not a huge amount of damage to the planking that was left on. "There are pockets of charred planking and some have gone, but it doesn't look as bad as first envisaged."
Dr Eric Kentley, curatorial consultant to the Cutty Sark Trust, said of the ship: "It can be saved. It's certainly not completely devastated. "We will put her back together - but it's going to take much, much longer and a lot more money than we originally thought."

Re: Cutty Sark Gone

The good thing is the woodworm has gone :D

The even better news is that all the parts are still available: oak and iron!

All the drawings are still on record, so she'll get rebuilt, probably funded by our National Lottery.

What gets my goat is that they believe it was arson
