I have a Rude 3 cyl electric shift 60 HP model# 60073. The guy I got it from stated it was stuck in forward. When I brought it home, oil leaked out of the small holes on the sides of the Lower unit. The oil looks brand new. I just put the motor on the boat, not bolted it on yet. Should I take the LU off & check the seals? Also, is there a way to test the solenoids to see if the malfunction is there? could it be a wire connection that is locking it in forward? It's a nice looking motor & I think it will push my 15' Glassmaster around pretty well, as long as I can get the LU fixed. Any solutions to my problem out here?

Re: #cyl Evinrude 60073 lower question

There should be two wires going thru a hole under the bottom carb, a green and a blue I think. Turn on the key and check for power from ground to each wire. With the control in forward there should be no power to either wire. Neutral should have one wire hot and reverse has both wires hot. If this checks out the problem is in the LU, if not it is in the control box.
To check the LU use a jumper wire from the battery to each of the wires but the engine must be running since the solenoids are operating valves in a pump buried in the LU.
Hope this helps.
