I have a 1971 50 hp Evinrude that starts and runs good, but only for about a minute or two. Then one cylinder cuts out and you limp back to the dock.

There seems to be plenty of cooling, or at least there is water pressure from the pump, and the buzzer don't go off. :D

Could it be one of the coils, or is there some magic box that I need to look at?

Is there a way to test the components with a multimeter?

Sorry about the faces, I just couldn't resist!
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks
Drifty

Re: Cylinder cuts out.

Hi, Drifty.

You are dropping a cylinder. Could be fuel, could be ignition. Need to find out which.

Squeeze your primer bulb. What happens?
Check both cylinders for spark AFTER the cylinder drops out.

Let us know what you find. :)

Re: Cylinder cuts out.

I squeezed the bulb and it made no difference. I am thinking along the lines of ignition but don't know how to check the system.

Re: Cylinder cuts out.

I could try a new coil and swap it out and see if it does the trick, but I wanted to know if there was a better way to check the rest of the electronics on the ignition.

I don't really know what the system consists of on that motor. Anyone know?
