Hello guys, Im new to the site and I have a 1989 Mariner 60 HP 3 cylinder and was out on the water last weekend and running at WOT the motor just cut off. It then started right back up but would only rev up to around 3000 rpms so first thing that came to mind was spark plugs so I got home and went to change spark plugs and notice silver on the top of the top plug. I've been reading about it and sounds like cylinder is scored could someone please offer me some help on where to begin on how to repair this.

Re: Cylinder Issue

Silver implies steam, water leaking into the cylinder. Check out the compression in each cylider first

Re: Cylinder Issue

Aluminum deposits imply cylinder damage, usually caused by incorrect timing, lean fuel-air mix or overheating. Check compression, and post results. if compression is good (it's possible), you will want to check timing, clean carbs and replace waterpump impeller, seals and other worn parts.

Re: Cylinder Issue

Ok so happy I could cry with joy! just did a compression check and compression is reading around 120 on all 3 cylinders so where should I begin in stopping this from happening again?

Re: Cylinder Issue

wait for your manual then do the carbs, a link & sync, the water pump and fuel pump

once disassembled, you'll be able to see if some parts are too much worn (like carbs inlet needle or water pump baseplate), if not, don't order the complete kits, only the gaskets kit for the carb, the impeller for the water pump and the diaphragm kit for the fuel pump)

If you need help, provide us your serial number and we'll give you the parts numbers.

Adjusting the ignition timing in sync with the throttle (carbs) opening

OK manual should be in tomorrow or friday, will post serial numbers tomorrow for the parts I need, I figured I might as well fix everything that I can to avoid any future problems. Thank you so much for you help a cylinder problem had me shivering with fear!

Re: Cylinder Issue

Like I said in my previous post, you'll have to tear it down to know exactly wich parts you'll need.

Re: Cylinder Issue

The only variable is the amount of items to replace in the water pump. Inspect the water pump cover and see if the ss insert is damaged or grooved. Replace the wear plate, impeller and all gaskets, and the waterpump cover is necessary.

Clean the carbs and Install carb kits and perform the link and synch, and then adjust idle mixture. Test the thermostat (if you have one). It should open at about 143 degrees F. Replace if necessary.

Serial Number is 0C161502, Just wondering how do I tell if carb needs to be rebuilt or just cleaned and How do I tell what parts on the water pump will need to be replaced or is just plainly noticiable?

Re: Cylinder Issue

How to tell if some of the parts are too worn, the water pump base should be smooth, if it has any grooves in it at all....it's bad. The impellar, well I would change that for the heck of it, you have to take the assembly apart anyway. The cover the impellar sits in should have a smooth interior, if not, replace it. Thermostat should open at 143 defrees. Put some water on the stove, put the t-stat in there with a thermometer. When the water hits 143 degrees it should be fully open...if not, replace it. Carbs, if you never cleaned them....then you need to do it. Take them apart, get a few cans of carb cleaner and spary them inside and out...every opening, tube, jet, EVERYTHING...then blow compressed air through everything to blow everything out of it. Check the inlet needle, should have a perfect cone looking tip, if it's not, replace it. Other than that you should be ok. The Water pump and cleaning the carbs are really easy to do. Follow the steps to the link and sync to a "T" though, and if you get stumped, someone on here will halp you out.
