cylinder taper

I'm going to be honing the cylinders of my Merc 850 with a deglazing tool designed to be used with a hand drill.

Is there an alternative I can use to honing oil? It is rather difficult to find and the machine shops I've called don't sell it and aren't intersted in giving or selling some of theirs.

Also, I will be measuring the bore with an inside caliper then in turn measuring that with a vernier caliper. Not the most accurate method but the other thing that's difficult or too expensive to get is an inside micrometer. ...but I digress...

If I find that the cylinder is slightly tapered or barrelled can I correct it by honing? Are there any techniques to doing this? Do I just linger in the area where I need material removed and check the measurement often?

Re: cylinder taper

I'd suggest just about any oil for the honer, I usually use 'marvel mystery oil' or some multi-grade 5w-whatever I have leftovers of.

As far as correcting anything, no way are you going to be able to correct any major problems with a hone (and if it's enough to need fixing, it's major). That'll have to go to a machine shop to be bored out (if possible). Getting a cylinder or two bored out isn't usually very expensive, just make sure you have new oversize piston before taking it to the machine shop. With that the should be able to give you a perfect fit.

I agree, you will never correct out of round with a hone. Invest in a inside micrometer it will save on rings and possibly pistons in the future. Some cylinder blocks allow the sleve to be pressed out so you can keep the same pistons and only replace the rings (suggested. This might be a better way to go.
