i need to set my timeing pointer on my 1983 175 evin crossflow
i will use a dial indicator to do it insted of pisto stop
can any one give me th run down on useing the indicator instead of piston stop , i take it that you set it up on number one zero it and rotate fly wheel
till it reads the highest point then rock it back and for and use the highest point in between at tdc , and that is were i est my timeing pointer
i use it on my race car motor ,but my manual only shows piston stop method .
it seems that the dial indicator would be quicker and more accurate
any of you guys that use one to set timeing pointer please respond
thanks

Set the dial indicator to a specific depth or measurement. Rotate in one direction till it touches and mark. Then rotate beyond tdc and rotate in opposite direction till it touches and mark. Measure the distance between the two, half it and there you go. No estimation req.

Just set it up and roll the flywheel over until the indicator shows that you've went past TDC. Then back up a bit and go forward again. You'll see where the indicator stops as the piston reaches TDC, then it won't move, then it goes the other way.

Depending on your particular theory / defination of TDC you can set the pointer to when the idicator first stops moving, in the middle of the flywheel travel when it's not moving or when the needle starts to move again. The flywheel movement won't be much but you'll notice a slight movement between the time the needle stops moving one direction and when it starts the other direction. For a recreational motor I'd set it in the middle.

thank you mr hadley and skeeter
i assume that my timeing pointer will then be set to zero at that point
is there any reason to check cylinder two or should i just check it
when i time it , also have been useing mr reeves method
should i double check on the water ,thank you i know you are busy
i used piston stop and joe reeves method on last one i did it worked pretty well, but this time i want to time it at the launch after his method

Yes, check #2 especially if you have dual packs. Yes, check it in the water under a load. Using the method Joe describes should get you dead on with no tweaking but you need to make sure.

yes i have two packs i will check the timeing on both banks in the water as close to 4500 or till my timer base hits .whats the easiest way to tell what the rev limiter on a pack is or if it has one ,maybe run the part number
thru i shop marine or is it in the pack thanks for the advice on the timeing
will let ya know how it gos got some good advice on here ,on these crossflows .still havent went to the boysens .may leave it alone and run it at
stock level cant really justify trying to get more power out of the crossflow
would like older looper whats the best older year of the looper 140
that can be modded fairly cheaply have seen some post on here with the carbs and cut intake mods am fixing to start looking will be a total rebuild
with mod from the get go and also proprly done will it be dependable
thanks again Bennyb

The pack will have a number / letter after the part number telling where the limiter is, if it has one. Look for something like 58L. 62L etc.
