So I started out with a gasket scraper and flat head screw driver and quickly switched to the big gun. I still had to use the others for around rivits and stubborn glue but it worked. Finished off with the orbital sander, variable speed sander, mouse sander and a lot of hand sanding.

Paint? Lol. Not even close yet, I started removing the floor after working on the sides to have a surface to work off of if you can call it a floor. The floor is very soft and brittle but it was better than working while laying on the aluminum bottom. Mine has aluminum strengthening plates running from the transom foreword, I don't know where they stop yet. Couple more pics here

Can someone tell me if this is a major problem or no big deal (normal from factory). The four bottom rivets are not sandwiched or smashed in the stringer like in the other two pictures. The third picture is the one in question.

That is a pic of your one of ypur ribs(port to starboard), yes? I believe that is to let water pass underneath it back to the bilge. Though to be sure, you may want to check with some of the guys in the StarCraft section under manufacture specifics. There are some I credibly knowledgeable guys there.

There are also some amazing got detailed builds by a few that will answer questions you'll be coming up with soon, like what kind of rivets should I use to replace the leaky ones? What is the best way to apply gluvit? While there are a lot of them, this morning, Watermans (sp?) Builds are coming to the front of mind.

Great story btw, my little '79 Sylvan Sportster 16 is full of fond and fun memories from the time I was 12 years old. It took my wife a while to grasp that that's about the only toy I have that I won't consider selling, regardless if it only makes it out once a year these days. After a few years of stories revolving around that between family and friends she came around :)

Looking forward to seeing you bring the Jupiter back to her former glory, and then some!!

It looks like the rivet heads have popped off. Maybe due to hull flexion? Regardless, they'll need to be replaced.

Strokendiesel002 yes it is the rib, memories matter the most to me. You can buy a new boat but I like that old history. I have many more great memories with this boat. Many things can happen to belongings fires, floods, tornadoes, as long as I have my family and memories I'm happy and would be fine. Combining the old memories and making new ones is definitely a plus. I haven't seen the spec post yet but I have read through Inmotion AndyformNY etc. Ezmobe, cheapboatKev GA_Boater Rickairmedic and many more members have contributed to the posts or shared their projects that I have read, I can't remember them all off the top of my head, some tend to run together. I am very thankful to have the resources and good people on here to have a good compass to help guide us all through the problem or project we all on here might face. To give back I wanted to document the progress on this one. I also have a bunch of pictures of the outboard with the cover off to guide me in replacing the harness but I'm not quite there yet. I will have to try to find the specs and see. Thank you.

Cool gunna have a home theater system in it and everything !
Glad you got the pics worked out !
Made GA earn his keep huh .. ;)

I learned a lot working in the gravel drive way as a kid, one thing was you need to find the largest piece of cardboard you can and guard it like someone was going to steal it at any moment. Don't be eyeing my cardboard, you can't have it.:D Yes GA didn't give up and it is greatly appreciated.

Anyone have a guess how many pool noodles a 16' Jup will fit for flotation under the floor?

Pool noodles have been pretty much ruled out for flotation. They just don't work very well.

Here's how I did the flotation for my Kingfisher. Pink foam home insulation. The blue is where I covered the pieces with HDPE garbage bags which are gasoline proof. Folks generally use the pink or blue closed cell foam, whichever is available locally to them.

Is that aluminum duct tape? Where did you find the garbage bags, are they special use or something? I remember reading a post by a former coast guard guy ( its fuzzy ) but I thought the flotation factor was better with them. I'm worried I will buy the wrong foam at a big box don't have the part you need store. I haven't found a spec or brand that verifies I have the right stuff.

Great, my Wife and Daughters just bought a car load of pool noodles. Anyone need a pool noodle? Maybe I can make a canopy out them, or rollers for the trailer.

I did a test of Owens Corning Foamular last year. Submerged a chunk in water for 3 months. I weighed it before and after on a grain scale - zero absorption.

I didn't really want to see glue chiseling and absolutely no paint drying pics unless you have video. LOL I was joking earlier cuz drying paint pics are a source of amusement in the forums.

Speaking of restos - Would you like the thread to be moved into the Starcraft forum?

Pool noodles work, but you get more flotation with closed cell sheet insulation. Noodles have that big hole in the center that fill with water if things go south and water doesn't float.

When I did mine, I ran the foam sheets length-wise with the thought of an unblocked path for water to the bilge to pump overboard. Haven't tested the idea and don't plan on it. BWR's way works just as good. Pack as much as you can under the deck. I also glued foam sheets to the hull behind the side panels and it's stuffed full with channels for wiring and cables.

Are your knees hurting from kneeling on ribs and feet ache from standing on those ribs? I used a piece of plywood for future decking and laid it across the stringer to the chines just like decking. Actually, I cut the deck ply long before cleaning under the deck and moved the pieces in and out to give a work surface. My tripping over the stringer was also reduced.

Yes, aluminum duct tape. And I did glue the individual blocks together with waterproof construction adhesive. The trash bags I found online by doing a search for HDPE trash bags. I used the Owens Corning Foamular in the 3/4" pink, which was all that was available at the local big box store.

Oldrem thank you, I have been busy today getting the floor out. What a mess, you guys weren't kidding about that styrofoam it is probably the worst flotation you could find. The top layer was Swiss cheese looking but dry and light, and the bottom was heavy enough to pass for solid wood of the same size.
BWR thank you, that helps a bunch.
GA_ Boater thank you for the info. You got me on the chiseling glue but I already had the pictures so I figured why not? Lol. Moving the thread would be ok with me. Wait, does this mean I have to pay Starmada dues now? See I do read. As for the knees, I dunno I can't feel them yet, because they were folded up in so many awkward places, I'm sure that I will notice tomorrow. I don't want to test the flotation either but that reminds me of a story in Dads old boat.
So one day we planned a fishing trip on a lake nearby . We had gotten pretty good at getting up early and launching quickly. This day was no different, on the water in a shot, however one of the two of us forgot something, not as turn around and go get it, as in chained to the transom. Yep no plug, so we were what seemed like in my mind miles from shore and I (keeping the trained vigilant eye that I was taught) looked back as we passed the last no wake marker to see WATER in the boat. Me in panic mode once again notified the commander of the new changes in our relaxing fishing plans. Immediately I rushed to remedy the issue. At the moment of my arrival at the drain I hear that old outboard roar to life! Now I am in enough water to soak my shirt and dang near drown me and the splash well above my head has it in for me . Dad says leave it out, again I am young and this appears to be a really bad decision given my current position. We hauled the mail like it was on fire and we couldn't find water (we had plenty but it wasn't where we wanted it). So at this point I'm still at the ready plug in hand (did I mention it was chained to the transom, it's a short chain). Now bouncing down the lake and coming up for air periodically to remove my face from the hazards trying to do me in. The boat seemed to take two years to finally plane out, but it did and I had a front row seat to watch as almost every drop left the boat in its own sweet time. I managed to return to my assigned position exhausted and soaked, while slowing down from the excitement Dad looks at me and sees I that I look like I was overboard for an hour and laughs, I looked down to see my current attire and laughed with him. I don't remember if we caught anything but I won't forget that. Thanks for jarring my mind to remember the good times. Today was a good day.
