The engine circulation pump (called a water pump in the automotive world) does not have a rubber impeller and will not be damaged.

Thanks again Don. It seeme like its not too hard to do. Are there any alignment issues to be worried about when mating the lower unit back to the upper unit. Or can it just go back together.

Here's what mine looked like when I changed the impeller. I knew the guy I got the boat from had run it without water "just to see if it will turn over". I did not want to take a chance on how many times he had done that. If you look closely, you can see some drips of melted rubber.

Thanks for the pic.

Any suggestions on what repair kit to get? Mercury sells one it looks like for about $50 and Sierra sells a repair kit with impeller, gaskets, and wear plate for $30.

Which one lasts longer?

Also will the Seloc manual be fine to use for this? Seems like it has more pics?

I have always bought the sierra parts with no problems.
My local NAPA carries them,A little cheaper than getting stuff from the dealer..
The Seloc may be ok for the impeller change but you really need to get the real factory service manual if you plan on doing your own work and service.

I gave you the link to the actual Merc service manual, why would you want to buy a Seloc?

Going to order the Sierra impeller repair kit. Can someone verify this is the right kit for an ALPHA 1 GEN 2

Would I be better off ordering a whole new pump? The drive is only 3 years old.

When you buy the whole pump kit you get the housing too.Usually the housing is fine unless it got really hot.
So usually the impeller,gasket and wear plate does the trick...
