I am new to river boating i have all my experiance on lakes (which seems to have less stuff to hit) last night we were out and i went over a spot i have been over many times but last night i heard a real nasty sound and as you can tell from the topic my lower unit is all tore up. I have never had a claim with an insurance company for a boat are there any things i need to not say when i report the claim? my friend says dont tell them what you hit i cant see why that would matter any

Good luck. That kind of thing isn't what insurance is for. That would be like making a claim with your car insurance company because your transmission went out.

but if you were driving down the road and ran over something and it tore your transmission from under your car your insurance company will cover it

6 balls, did you actually hit something? If you did it should be covered. But how about READING (yes I said it) your policy?! :D
As far as not telling the truth... your friend is an idiot & a crook if he does that crap, and I hope it bites him in the A** someday.  People like him are why insurance companies are so skeptical. And in your first post, making this statement:
are there any things i need to not say when i report the claim?
, makes me think you are just like your friend.
Where are you located, and who's your insurance company?

Tilliam i did read the policy but it is like reading greek. Also I think you are taking my statement about not saying certian things the wrong way. I was not saying should I not tell the truth to my insurance company. I was asking if there are certian key words to pro-long the process. I will give an example that may make more sence. I used to work for a car dealer i used to process warranty claims I had a case where a customer had a problem with a part the problem was it had a big crack in it and water got in and cause the part to rust from the inside so when i called in to have the claim processed i said the word RUST and the guy on the other end of the phone said sorry we dont cover rust. That was the end of our conversation so for the next 2 weeks i had to try to contact this persons supervisor to explain the real problem was that the part had cracked and that is what caused the situation. We finally got it settled but it took two weeks longer then needed just because somebody did not take the time to hear me out they just jumped to conclusions as soon as they hear the word rust.
My intent here was not to ask advise on how to rip anyone off my intent was to ask advise about my accident on the river. Please dont take what i said out of context i am in no way a crook or a thief. Insurance rates are high enough from people cheating them. I was just wondering if there were any words that i would want to no say as it would prolong my claim

6 balls, ok, fair enough.
Don't use phrases like, "to be completely honest with you...", or "to tell ya the truth..." cause that implies you were not telling it all be fore!
In your case, you need(ed) to report the claim in a timely fashion, and tell them the circumstances as you know them. Don't use the boat again. Also be polite, and follow any instruction you are given. Be prepared to do leg work... such as get the boat to a repair shop, and keep in contact with your insurance company. Don't tell anyone to "go ahead & fix it" until you know that your insurance company has seen it. Be patient, these things take a little time.

Re: damaged lower unit

Basically, if you hit something unseen and unexpected, which caused the damage to your lower unit, you should ber covered.

But insurance companies are known for wriggling out if they can, so tread carefully. I'll mention two examples.

A friend here hit a submerged log and wrecked his lower unit. He was leaving the island the same day, and did not return for several weeks. He then made the claim, and the insurers said that the delay ruled him out. He persisted, and asked them exactly where in the policy it gave a deadline for making claims. It didn't, and eventually his claim was settled. But it was an uphill fight.

I had a cabin cruiser moored in a tidal harbour with a river running through it. The harbour dried out at low tide and all boats settled on the fine gravel bed. Severe weather brought rocks downstream into the harbour, and when my boat settled, its hull was pierced by a rock. When the tide came in the boat stayed where it was. I made a legitimate claim, and we had a six-month fight to get it settled, even with the full backing of the harbourmaster.

Insurers like taking money, not giving it!

My policy covers damage from "striking a submerged object". It all depends on the content and wording of your policy. I suspect you'll be taking Greek lessons. ;)
