Damaged Seat?What now??

I have a 1994 Crownline 196br with a 5.0L Mercruiser. The rear bench seat has been split down the middle. The upholstery and padding are both good but the wood inside the seat is destroyed.

I called my local Crownline dealer who told me that the boat is too old to get a factory replacement. What are my options?

Is there a company that makes aftermarket drop-in replacements? or do I need to cut a new seat myself and have in upholstered?

The boat has been in my family since it was new and is otherwise in perfect condition.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hey Mason

Welcome...Check with your local upholstery shop. They should fix you up since it will need to be re-covered with the existing..just call around.

Take it to an uholstery shop, they'll be able to fix you right up.

Or cut a new piece of wood (not too hard, the old one even if damaged can be used for measurements). Pull the upholstery and foam off the old seat, normally just pulling hinges/hardware and ALOT of staples (actually you probably did that already to get the measurements from the wood) and staple it (stainless steel staples and a staple gun) to the new wood (pull the vinyl TIGHT while stapling). Pat yourself on the back, you just did a boat repair and saved some money compared to taking it to a shop.

+1 to doing it yourself, I am in the process right now with some seats

It's important that you use stainless steel staples. Regular ones will disappear in short order.

Any suggestions on what type of wood works best?

marine grade ply is best..... exterior grade ply will work too... I recommend painting it with an exterior house paint before replacing upholstery.... also don't get too wild stretching the old fabric tight.... It has already stretched since new 18 years ago... stretch it tighter and you are asking for rips

I coat my plywood with epoxy resin before I attach upholstery to it.

also an excellent choice... likely better than paint and only just a little more work
