Re: Damn Poachers

Poachers when caught need to be field dressed where you find them.Even though a land owner doesnt own the animals he still owns the land.

I totally agree with you, they are stealing from us and they are trespassing as well, add to that the Warden being murdered and you have the exact reason why I believe shoot them, all Poachers are the worst of human beings and they reflect horribly on hunters. Hunters bare the burden of supporting wildlife in our states, 95% here in Colorado and while we all know these POS's are not hunters the public just lumps them into the Hunting culture. Unfairly or not that's a fact that can't be argued. IMO the biggest problem is that there just isn't enough Tech training for Wardens, maybe they need to be SWAT trained I mean think about it they are always dealing with armed people AND they are ALWAYS out manned and out gunned, they are in a no win situation in dealing with this kind of criminal. I used to think being a cop was the most thankless job but I think being a Warden could beat it by 10 fold.

Re: Damn Poachers

We have a similar poaching problem here. Except, its mostly on the Reservation, or committed by Rez. locals.
They do what they want when they want, and to heck with the consequences. If they do get caught, they charges are read in and dismissed.

Talk about being neighbors, I bet we're real close!
Drive thru a rez and you wont even see a deer. I think the season is open year round. They have a whole set of their own rules.

Talked to my brother last nite. We have 86 acres in N Mn, 5 of them being a small field. He said he saw truck tracks in the field. I guess they drove off the highway on it. Must of been a lifted truck since the ditch area is short and steep(tracks in the snow were wide). A regular truck would get stuck. They tried to "hide" the truck behind some balsms. I guess they almost ran over a no trespassing sign. Of course, there were footprints on the edge of the field and a couple of sets down a trail we mow. We figure a deer had crossed the road and they were trying to go after it. Posted 1 guy in the field and the other 2 looped around to drive it out of a chunk of woods. They never followed the mowed trails to our stands. It appeared a, "get in quick and out quick". Brother never saw any sign of a deer being dragged out. Thankfully. Thing is, there's nothing anyone can do unless they're caught in the act. It's frustrating........

I am not sure about the states but in Canada native reservations are federal and do not fall under local juristriction, and most treaties allow hunting 12 months of the year with no licence/tags required.

Around here, pot growers have decimated deer populations. Its ridiculous. We have bumper stickers saying "Save a Deer Smoke a Drug Dealer"

Re: Damn Poachers

My daughter called me this morning saying we have poachers on the farm, I grew up on a farm, she lives there now. These are coming in from subdivisions that have built up around the farm. They called the law, they did their thing now the DNR is going to be actively working the farm for poachers. They have even moved a couple of stands we had built, went looking for them and found the signs, one friend we allow to hunt heard a bullet pass by him one afternoon. These people are dangerous. Sure hope they don't hurt my family, I got a daughter, sil, 2 grandsons there.

Re: Damn Poachers

Here in Kansas City we have a park called Shawnee Mission State Park. It is so packed with deer people driving through the park hit them all the time and have caused many accidents.Last year the KDWP decided to shoot many of the dear to control population. People were in the park protesting that this was inhumane. They threw pig blood on the shooters and screamed profanities calling them muderers and poachers .KDWP is doing it again this year ,just saw it on the news this morning. They really are providing a public service and people are going crazy again !They are giving the venison to the homeless shelters around the area not just going to waste. The people that are complaning are city people that really have no idea what an overun dear population can do to the environment around them. The overpopulated dear also attract other predators, coyote and cougars. And in a park in the middle of the city, where your kids play and swim you really don't want that.

Update.......
Well on the news this morning yet again the dear problem. They are saying that they only need to kill 10% of the dear that they did last year. They will be using Law Enforcement sharpshooters after normal operating hours of the park. What do you guys think ?Is this the right solution ?

Re: Damn Poachers

Sounds like a plan to me. Then donate the meat to the homeless shelters... It's not like they can be trapped and relocated(unless you're Billy the Exterminator, of course:)). Although, I'm sure that's what some of the residents want to see happen.....

Re: Damn Poachers

Sounds like a bad situation, but as long as the meat is processed, its not a total waste.

Here, a lady fed a deer and enjoyed having it in her yard. A neighbor complained to Fish & Game and since it is illegal to feed wild animals here, they trapped it and then destroyed it, for its own good

Many wild horses die during BLM's roundups. Some are run to the point of literally running their hooves off.

Animal management??

Re: Damn Poachers

We encourage deer poaching in these parts. They are nothing but a pain in the butt. Did you know that deer are not even native to this part of the country? They were brought here by people. Now we should eliminate them.

Yup, its the same here. Tribal lands are under federal protection, unfortunately. The problem we have here, where I live, is the amount of forest roads that lead to nowhere, that go through non-tribal lands. But get road hunted at night year round. If the poachers do get caught, and happen to be tribal members, they are automatically released, when the case come to trial, the charges are read in and dismissed. That just ain't right. Poaching is a crime, and the poachers should be jailed for each offense. Whether they are tribal members or not.
If they wanna kill every deer on the tribal lands, go ahead. But, if they leave tribal lands, they should have to abide by ALL applicable laws. That need's to include the consequences of violating the laws.

Nope! We killed all the native humans. Now we are working on the deer.

Re: Damn Poachers

We had a poacher last year that we caught and pressed charges on. He is a relative of the people that own the property next to us but they don?t live on the property. He comes in every year with his son from South Carolina they buy resident license on the Internet and shoot every thing they see. Well last year they crossed the property line and crossed to the other side of our property even crossing the road that divides our property. He shot a doe and her fawn still with its spots cut the backstraps off both and left the rest. Then when I confronted him he had the nerve to get mad at me for stopping him. When Keith our DNR officer confronted him he cussed him out. Keith gave him several situations and a court date. A few days before his court date he called the prosecutor and gave him a sob story about haw difficult it would be for him to return from out of state to appear in court. Well the prosecutor reduced all the charges down to warnings and let him go. I wish I was a fly on the wall when Keith confronted the prosecutor and told him if it were his life on the line dealing with these people he wouldn?t be dismissing his cases. Keith went on to tell him if he rights a ticket it better be prosecuted.

As an update from the other night, we now have a good idea who our poacher is. Wednesday night people two miles from us reported someone shooting deer from the road they got the license plate number and a description of the vehicle. The description matches the one we gave even though we didn?t get the license number it?s believed to be the same people. I don?t know what actions Keith is going to take yet but I will post as soon as I get it.
