Damnit,Damage worse than thought!!! NEED ADVICE!!!!!

Well after spending 4 days taking the power head off and tearing it apart in my basement..i was horrified by what I saw!! As some of you know my buddy gave me a boat and blown engine for free...after taking off the head it looked like it just chewed up some rings...well i just finished tearing it down to get to the crank today and was shocked!!!

after taking off the starboard throttle body behind the offending piston i saw some rust! then as I took off the bottom of the block and saw the crank i saw that part of the crank all rusty and part of the connecting rod sheared off next to the connecting bolt!!! (guess that was that hunk of metal on top of the piston).....well i attached a few pics and please please someone tell me i can fix this and maybe resurface the crank ( because i know they go for like 2k!)

after all this work I just hope to hell I can salvage this motor for less than a new powerhead would cost! ($3200-$4000)

and the last pic my 8yr old "helper" took of me =) at least we are making some sort of boat memories together even if not on the water!!!

take the crank to a good machine shop and have them look at it. If the local dealer will tell you who they use take it to them. Or better yet find someone in the AOMCI in your area and find out who they recommend. The machine shop will be able to tell you about the crank much better than I can. Do the cylinders look like they will hone out?

the cylinders are sleeved...i found a place online that quotes aboue $128 to resleeve a cylinder...from what I can see the block doesnt look cracked or anything..could have possibly been a blown gasket and water intrusion.....

i need to make sure i get the right tool for removing the rest of the rods to get the crank out...because if they are still fine i dont want to risk damaging them and blowing even more money..this is the first time ive ever torn down the engine so im taking it somewhat slow and already have about 100 pictures documenting where every part goes lol!


oh and the local dealer my buddy went to have it "fixed" said they dont do machine work or have it sent out...they sell you a new/rebuilt powerhead or nothing and thats it.

no special tools to get them out. To get the pistons back in yes. Unbolt the rods and the crank and the crank will lift out. Squirt some oil in the cylinder and pull the pistons out by the rod. I like to mark what piston came out of what hole and put them back that way when I put it back together. You will need a ring compressor to put them back in and of course a torque wrench when you put it together. Just follow the manual.

hahha yeah ive been taking the manual to work and reading it daily on my lunch break.

ill take the crank out tomorrow night then and look at the block more closely.what seemed like a scary task or removing every part from the block turned out to be quite fun and educational...just hope the internals are salvageable so I can test my skills and putting everything back together correctly and have a working motor. =)

keep all the corresponding cylinder parts together , that will save some money.

I paid $1500 for my V6, then spent another $200 in parts to get a good runner, you can buy a lot of parts for that amount.
Decent running V6's sell for $2400 around here from dealers.

The only "special tool" you'd need to get the rods out would be a thin-walled 12-point 5/16" socket. I've got a NAPA one I use to pull the rod bolts...

You have water intrusion. If you don't find and correct that, it will all happen again.

From the scope of the damage, I'd say go for a powerhead anyway. You will probably find much more bearing damage when you get deeper into it. Trying to get by with pitted bearing surfaces will only bring more grief in the future.

I'd hinge the descision on the condition of the crank. That is no cheap part. What were your comp readings before the tear down? Are all the cylinders bored beyond oversized pistons and were resleeved?

there were no reading before...the shot piston is seized up so i couldnt rotate the crank....ill get the socket for the rod bolts and remove the crank tonight and look...gonna be real bummed if i have to spend $$$ on a new powerhead =( if that happens ill have a surveyor go over my boat and make sure its 100% strong before I go blowing money on an engine.

Looks like you have a major job on your hands. I think I would be more inclined to part it out and look elsewhere (but that's me)

The pictures I looked at...... There is no way you'll ever be able to use that crankshaft, main bearings, any bearing for that matter, connecting rods, etc. The engine has all appearances of having been underwater. Was it a underwater job that was insured, owner reimbursed, and owner then tossed it off?

You'll find that it just isn't worth the time and money that you'll be forced to put into it. Better to look abound on eBay, etc OR, since you got it all free, part it out, sell the rig, and start anew.

yeah i guess thats what ill do....Im going to make sure the boat is in tip top shape and will be a great project in itself and when the boats squared away Ill but a new outboard.....well at least I learned ALOT about all the accessories and how an outboard is put together!

Crankshafts can be repaired by a shop with the right equipment and expertise. When you take the rod caps off make sure the rods and caps are marked so you can put them back together the same way, they're matched and not interchangable, if not the bearings will not last. When you get the engine disasembled you need to take it to a machine shop that works on marine engines because they are a different animal compared to automotive engines.

I do not think your motor has been submerged, most likely it is cracked, water leaked into the cylinder and caused the rust and the piston to seize. Soak the stuck piston with penetrating oil them use a hammer and a piece of wood (2x4) to knock the piston loose without tearing anything up.

Personally, I think you are going to find that you need a new powerhead to get any use out of that motor. Good luck.

well i can buy a rebuilt power head for about $2600 and reuse all my accessories...the lower unit is fine...but i'd want a new prop. its either that option or i spend 7 or 8 grand on a new outboard!

might want to look on ebay,
localy we have sevral loopers and a couple of crossflow motors
complete ,with claimed good comp numbers for 600 and 800 looper
i used a powerhead bought from ebay used last year .took a chance but it was with in driveing range paid 400 after he ran dry comps for me
motr is real stong ,look around you will find something,if ya buy a powerhead with warranty you may want to stay local if possible ,try to find your local
boat machine shop they may have some stuff ,
the 175 crossflow i just did had two sleeves in it he went 030 on all holes and it cleaned up bearings and crank will be high ,you could probaly find a donor motor ,anyway good luck

No need to buy a new outboard if you do not want to invest that kind of money. There are plenty of really good used outboards around for a heck of a lot less money that will give you many years of great service with regular and proper maintenance.
