I have WinXP
I just tried to setup dialup, it seemed to work
First go to control panel and select internet options.
Click on the tab "connections".
Click add beside the dial up and virtual private settings box.
Click Dial up to private network.
Enter phone number, you may have to enter area code also.
Automatically detect settings.
Enter dial up settings, user name & password.
That should work.

Re: Damsel in Distress -Internet Connection Setup Problem

I'm telling ya, I'm about ready to go coastal here.

I borrowed an external read/write CD burner thinking this was the best way to move the data off and gave up on the darn connection. But, as my luck would have it, there aren't any adapters that'll work.

I feel like I'm going half way 'round my azz to kiss my elbow. I finally gave up and just got back from Office Depot with and RJ45 cable and Intellimover PC Transfer software.

I will deal with the connection problem later. Right now, I need my data files transferred.

Thanks again for all your help (and patience).

Connie

Consider a little USB external storage device (flash drive) the 256Mb and 512Mb ones are cheap these days or get yourself a full fledged external USB hard drive - like the Maxtor Onetouch line.

Here's an example of the USB flash drives:
http://www.geeks.com/products.asp?cat=RDM#RemovableUSBStorage

Here's an example of the Onetouches:
http://www.maxstore.com/searchcat.asp?search_id=3

All are plug-and-play and will instantly show up as another hard drive after being plugged into a USB port

Does this computer have its original modem? It might be possible when you did the reboot that the driver did not install for the the modem or the wrong driver was selected. Also make sure you have the phone line installed in the correct port. One for the telephone and one for the phone jack.

Eurolarva, its a brand spankin new modem. I tried using the dialer via another program and called my cell phone and it worked just fine. So I think the modem and phone line is okay.

In the device manager it recognizes the modem and also says its working properly.

LF, Have you made sure that "Never dial a connection" box is not checked?

Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections -> Then select "Always Dial my Default Connection"

Brand spanking new might be the problem. When you reinstalled XP you may have lost the driver to the new modem. I am much better at fishing then computer repair so this may be off base. If you still have the driver disk that came with the modem try reinstalling it and see if it works.
