The horror! They need taught a lesson. Make them sit on your plate after grilling to rare or med rare, season with sea salt, pepper, and garlic. That will teach them!

Makes you think twice about how well the DNR really tracks poaching.

With this years snow pack finding food has become very hard on Bambi.

I've seen more neighborhood deer this year than any other year I can remember. Shovel the walk and they use the path.:)

Re: Dang thieves !!

The deer are struggling big time this year. I can't even count how many I've seen going down the road lately. They'll run down the road while looking for a trail to jump on. I've had to speed up and pass them just so they would stop running.

I hang a deer's rib cage in a tree each year for the birds to chew on all winter. I'm now seeing squirrels eating it too. Never saw that before, I suppose they can't get at their stored food with all the snow....

I always feel bad shooting a deer. They are really cute critters but tasty ones at that......

In addition to the deer population, the duck population of Washington Island a most of door county is taking a big hit this year as well with the abundance of snow and cold according to my cousin who photographs for the local papers up there.

Looks like a young deer. So you know what that means? Yes, there are lots more. So you have to get out the recipe book(s) and start a long list of Venison meals.

You might want to throw out some corn for them too...

Fire up dat dare grill...

She doesn't have to.
The squirrels die of lead poisoning - I think.
See the one in the background?
And a few more just out of the frame.
Those buggers eat my house and invade my attic.

Not many more deer around.
Up until 5 years ago, there were 15 in the yard every night.
Probably 100 within a half mile of the house.
Then they all disappeared. Coyotes, wolves, disease?
Not many hunters right here, never heard a shot the last 2 years.
Had a big doe and her fawn in December. Then another young one came in, and the doe disappeared.

As soon as the snow is gone, the deer will go back to being nocturnal.

I have a deck, about 3 feet off the ground, pretty much blocked in on 3 sides with snow.
I have 5 mourning doves living under there.
They use the rabbit trails to enter and exit.
Strange.
But the brutal cold and wind must have been too much for them, and they sought out shelter, on the ground level.
Hard to believe they would expose themselves to the threat of wild mink and wild cats.

Re: Dang thieves !!

Having hunted for a number of decade, I can tell you wild animals are certainly not stupid. They will take the easiest trails just like man. When I was avidly hunting deer (many years ago now), I would make some trails to my deer stands. It was interesting watching the deer use those trails as they feed through the woods. So any wild animal will use the cleared trails UNLESS they sense danger. Then all bets are off. That young deer is certainly not starving but will eat the bird seed if it can. They adapt to most anything. That's why deer have been around for hundreds of years. Same with the squirrels, birds, rabbits and every other wild animal... Isn't nature neat! :joyous:

The feeding of deer while you may think is helpful, in many cases is not good for them. The corn idea is not a good choice, a deer digestive system ais not expecting the carb and sugar overload you are offering up, they can actually die from this because they just aren't used to eating this much high energy food in the middle of winter. Their systems have adjusted to much less over the tougher months. Now "last cut of hay" might be a better choice if you really want to help, but be selective about what you put out for them intentionally.
