I have switched gearbox oil from Quicksilver Premium to Quicksilver High Performance the last couple of changes. The Premium oil would not change colour but the High Performance oil comes out a lot darker than when it when in. I have not tried using Premium again but is this colour change normal?

The oil has only been in for about 10 hours use and three months since last changed. The motor is only used for fishing and has not had long hours of hard running.

Motor 1998 75 hp with 180 hours on the clock. No metal on the magnetic screw and no shiny metal pieces in the oil when held up in the sunlight. No obvious sign of water in the oil. Gearbox is running fine.

Should I be concerned?

Oil3 attachment show original color and oil from the gearbox.

Thanks

Dean

Re: Dark Gearbox Oil

The color change is normal.I have twins on my boat and on one the oil goes darker faster than the other????
Just keep it changed and maybe go back to the other.
I change mine way more than it's suggested.J

Re: Dark Gearbox Oil

Thanks for the reply Jerry.

I change to this oil the same time as I changed to a slight larger diameter prop. I changed back to the old prop the last time I changed the oil and the oil still went dark so it probably the oil.

It is reassuring to hear this happens in your motor as well.

Cheers

Dean
