I was fishing in the gulf close to shore and these pesky seagulls kept hanging around, I had bought 2 dozen of jumbo shrimp, cost me $12.00 a dozen and had to order them the day before so they would hold them for me.
we were fishing for speckled trout, hopeing to catch bigger trout useing bigger shrimp was our idea,we cast and the seagulls dive in swim to the bottom and steal the shrimp off the hook, after losing 4-5 we were getting mad,my brother cast out again with fresh shrimp and the seagull caught it in the air,we had fun watching him pull that seagull in out of the air,it put up a good fight, after getting it to the boat we removed the hook and had no more problems with our shrimp getting stolen.. anyone else have this problem??:)

when i used to fish from shore on the east coast of FL on the ICW, i used to have to check and make sure the seagulls werent close when i casting. we had to reel in a few gulls on different occasions. tards.

never heard of them diving to the bottom and getting it. bombing to get bait close to the top i could see.

Re: darn seagulls

Are there any laws that prevent using a shotgun to remove a few seagulls from your fishing spot?

Believe it or not, seagulls are on the endangered species list and are protected by fed laws in all fifty states up to $500.00 fine per bird.

$12.00 DOZEN?? For Jumbos?? Geez, hope you had good sushi or shrimp on the barbi if any survived the seagull attack.

Better to net up some small pinfish for those gator trout. They tend to swim down a little faster and get out of the way of those pesky dive bombers!

Re: darn seagulls

Caught a Pelican once. Had a pinfish out on a float about 100yrds. I see a pelican fly over it twice and then dive bomb my pinfish. I tried to reel/pull it is ASAP and the stupid bird got the 6/0 circle hook embedded in its throat. I reeled him in and grabbed em by his beak. my buddy cut the wire and pulled the hook through its neck. (ouch) It hung around us for another 30 mins for some reason. We decided we better find different structure to fish about 2-3 miles deeper. We never saw him again! (It is illegal in FL to feed the pelicans too) This one outsmarted us!

Re: darn seagulls

The older seagulls in our area seem to know better then to grab our baits. This time of year the new hatched birds are flying now and they are the nusince gulls. They stay just out of reach and dare you to cast your bait. I have been told that if you kill one and throw it over board that you will not have a problem with any more gulls around your boat. I do not know how true that is.

Re: darn seagulls

I was doing some salmon fishing out of bamfield bc
and hadsome seagulls trying to get my bait
had this seagull come get my anchovie I pull the line
and accidentally got the bird in the peak real the line
and i actually had to cut the line and lose my hook
the bird took off with the hook still attached to his peak
to my surprice the same bird came back for some more anchovies
well it got caught again but this time i send him for a nice dive
i drop my downrigger about 50 ft with the bird attached
lets just say the seagull never bug me again

Re: darn seagulls

pelican are easy to handle compared to gulls. 1st time i was afraid ed or embarrassed to catch a pell . don't be ! it happens a lot . make sure you bring it in , and do the best you can to remove the hook or line.years ago i fished the beach in destin. and the gulls where thick ,when the Spanish and bo bos ran the shore .just cast and u would hook up. trying for macks ! ended up with belly hooked gulls. always carried a knife to cut the hook out of the bird. lots of blood! but hooks and jigs are $$$$ when your !# 13/ ... 1 bird to 5 fish both were plentiful.
