I am trying to find a dash mounted "needle style" tach for my 1660 evinrude 40hp. it has no power, so I need the kind that hooks to teh kill switch wire.

I have looked all over but can't seem to find one that fits.. thanx in advance!
There is none that are currently being made, as far as I know. At least none built for the marine environment.
If you ebay for an old Airguide tach, make sure it's either got the proper "sender" black box for 2 cyl J/E magneto ignition or make sure it's "senderless". When I went looking, there were plenty of tachometer heads for sale, but they were missing that most important black box.

If you've got some background in electronics, or know someone who does, you might want to try my black box which adapts a common inboard/outboard tachometer set to 4 cylinders: http://forums.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=036529;p=1#000046
It hasn't been completely tested yet, but I'm confident it'll work up to 8000 rpm or so. It's pretty simple to build too.
That's how it stands on my bench now. If you find the needle occasionaly dips, try adjusting the value of R30 a bit. If you do have to adjust, please let me know.
well, I am still looking for an old one just for the sake of keeping theme, other wise that tiny tach looks great.

I'll dig through my parts bin and see how much of the bits I can find. I bet I have most of it..
