This shouldn't be too hard as Delaware is not a title state (for the boat only!) if that's where you are going to register the boat. Go back to the salvage yard and demand a salvage title. This will confirm that the salvage yard was the last documented owner. If worst comes to worst, they can slap a mechanic's lean on it, satisfy the time requirement, then "sell" it to you with a mechanic's lean or salvage title.

However, if you want to title the boat in Pa you may be screwed without a LOT of leg work and frustrating phone calls because the burden of proving and documenting the past owner who is on the title is up to you...same with the trailer.

One last though, you MIGHT be able to title the trailer as homemade. Check on the state where you plan on registering and titling the trailer for specifics.

yeah wingnutt, not as easy as that. the yard i bought it from was an automobile and truck place. the guy there got it for scrap as he said, with no intentions of ever doing anything with it. im working on getting a hold of previous owner. which is proving more difficult than i originally thought. if anyone knows of a real POS 19-21 ft boat and trailer with good papers lemme know. thanks

Re: Dead before even at ramp, help me!!

I had the same problem when i purchased my boat 2 years ago. The boat was from michigan, the seller moved to missouri (my state) but never registered the boat here and had expired registration in Michigan. Michigan also does not title boats or trailers or outboards (i believe, if i remember right). However, because the seller lived in missouri longer than 6 months, the boat was a Missouri boat, without a title. (Dont ask me how, missouri is the most ignorant titling states. We have to title boats, trailers, outboards, we even have to title Trolling motors!! really?) Anyways... rant over. Long story short, i had to be a pain in the guys butt for about a month before he did anything. I called daily. Finally, i drove back to the sellers apartment ( a few hours away) and handed him a small claims court summons. That evening, he drove back to michigan and reregistered the boat in michigan so i had current registration and could title boat, motor, and trailer in Missouri.

FYI, Michigan does title boats. Trailers weighing less than 2500lbs do not need to be titled but the owner can request a title if they want to have one.

I had a similar problem. I bought a boat from Mr. "A". CA DMV said boat belonged to Mr. "B", but did give me Mr."B" 's address. I wrote Mr."B" and said, "I think I have your boat" and explained my problem. Mr."B" replied that yes he had sold the boat to Mr. "A" and included a copy of release of liability form CA DMV was happy and all was well. Pehaps your DMV can help you too.

That seems an intelligent approach to resolving this. I wish all states did this and note that California isn't generally known for its good sense in government but they smacked the ball out of the park this time.

In my state they punish the new owner for the old owner's bad deeds.

GEt a paper and pen, write a bill of sale and sign it with the name on the title.

Or continue to make things hard.
