dead in the water!

I have a 1986 Bayliner 2.3L Volvo AQ131A with a penta 275 outdrive. I was out on the lake yesterday, and she was doing great. I was out for maybe 4 hours pulling the family on a tube and she sputtered and quit, with no luck starting anymore. I noticed some gas leaking from under the carb, and a couple times that day it had sputtered a couple times after we had turned off the key. The battery is strong and will turn the motor, but will not start. It had previously started on the first click throughout the day. I definately want to get this fixed as I do not want to blow myself up! And if the nice people from the lake are on this message board, thanks for the tow!

Back to the top, can anyone give me some ideas on where to start? and is the air filter the same as the flame arrestor? sorry might be a dumb question, but I am new to this stuff. Thanks!

On the flame arrester / air filter question - yep. Actually you don't have an air filter per se, only a flame arrester. If it is gunked up you can take it off and spray it down with some carb cleaner.<br /><br />You definately want to get the leaking carb issue taken care of. It could be several things - could be leaking from a worn throttle shaft bushing. Maybe the float or needle valve is sticking and flooding out the engine. Sounds like a carb rebuild or replacement may be in order.

Thanks, I will see if I can give it a good cleaning, to stop the leak. I talked to the guy who had it before me and he said he had it off right before he sold it and all passageways and everything looked to be in good shape.

Try pulling the carb off and looking at the shape of the gasket compared to the shape of the manifold. Make sure the gasket is not turned the wrong way. I had the very same thing happen, boat would stall and one day I noticed gas leaking out from under the carb. If he had the carb off he could have easily put the gasket back on wrong.
