Hi guys my TV died last night, I pressed the on switch there was just a click and all was dead after this.
I am now thinking of a new flat screen model,
could one of you experts let me know which is the better t v the plasma or the LCD model? I was told that the plasma gives off a lot of heat.

As I have a limited amount of space I will be looking at 40 inch model.

Thanks in advance regards JC.

LCD is the best bang for the money right now. Plasma does have a better picture, but they are more expensive and I have heard they have a shorter life.

Many myths.

Heat from a plasma TV?
Yes there is a "small" amount, I think my lap top runs hotter, or check your home theatre system for heat, you'll be surprised.

Plasma cost more?
No, they run a little less for their size, but it's getting closer.

LCD is better?
Sometimes yes and sometimes no, it just depends on what you want it to do and how you plan to use it. I won't go into the details unless you want them.

Plasma doesn't last as long?
Hasn't been shown to be true, both types are engineered for at least a ten year lifespan.

If you really want good color look at the OLED systems (Organic LED). Color is literally off the charts

Re: Dead T V

One of the big problems with plasma is that they are prone to burn-in. You shouldn't even consider one if you are using it for video games or anything with a repetitive image.

I just replaced a 4 year old plasma because my DVR had burned in a bar across the bottom of the screen where the time line bar was. I couldn't even read news scrolls or see sports scores because it was so bad. My wife would frequently pause shows to use the bathroom, talk on the phone or get a snack (sometimes for up to an hour at a time). Over the course of time, it destroyed a $3000 television.

Right now, larger plasmas are about $300 less than the equivalent size LCD. They are trying to get rid of them.

When you go looking, know your room dimensions and where you would normally be seated to watch TV. Then view the TV's you are interested in from all the normal distances and angles. Make sure you are getting what you need! I know some people always think bigger is better, but if you have a smaller room and are going to be about 10 feet or less from the TV, the 46 inchers and up are probably too big!

That statement is 100% absolutely false. That WAS an issue 2-3 years ago, but is not anymore. Its called pixel shift..................Panasonic came out with it a few years ago and now its industry wide.

Plasmas do not run nearly as hot as they once did either. They are much more efficient then when they came out.

As far as depth of color and picture.....plasmas are the way to go.

Often it isnt Plasma vs LCD.....usually it comes down to the environment you are watching the TV in.

LCD is the best out there now.

This is definately an opinion......and is NOT necessarily true.

Old technology....................pixel shift technology has eliminated the burn in issue. So the engineers claim.

Re: Dead T V

Years ago burn in was an issue if you planned to leave things on the screen for long periods of time and while it's still possible, the chances have been greatly reduced. That is one of the advantages an LCD has though, so if you want a computer monitor, or plan to use it for games, go LCD. If you want to watch movies and sports, have the best picture possible and no motion blur, go with Plasma.

If they were selling plasma TVs at a lower cost "just to get rid of them" it might help if they stopped making them first.

It'll be great when LCD can eliminate, or at least greatly reduce motion blur and I'm sure they will, when they do I'll be first in line to get one.

Yea they will probably continue to up the refresh rates until motion blur is a thing of the past. Of course we'll still pay a premium as it increases. I'll be interested to see them change the back lighting to LEDs instead of flourescents too. (I don't think that's quite the same thing as OLED but not sure) A set that doesn't motion blur and never dims over time. Sign me up.

I know you can change out the inverters and fluorescent tubes in LCD displays. Is there anything replaceable in a plasma display?

Does plasma stick to LCD or LCD only sticks to plasma? Oh wait I'm confusing that with...:D

Re: Dead T V

My brother -in- law just purchased a Sony 46 inch plasma and had an anti-glare screen put on it. When he was here on Sunday watching the football games, he commented that it looked more blured than my Sony 42 inch rear projection tv. I haven't seen it yet, just his words, doesn't sound overly pleased at this point. He set it up him self because Best Buy wanted an outragous price to do it for him, now he's thinking he might just have to give them a call.

At first I didn't think they made a 46" model, but I was able to find one.

Is it motion blur or just a fuzzy picture? The channel your watching and how everything is set up makes a huge difference.

I just checked the 42" Panasonic plasma and it is rated for 573 watts. That is a good bit of heat.
