Ok, so that Captain of the boat in the last show plans to put a Ice preventing tarp over the pods while he is at sea. He does this instead of taking much fewer pods like all the rest of the Captains do. Seems it will colder than usual and more ice will form on the pods creating a wall of ice and also making the ships more top heavy. So this Captain/boat owner has crew members way up on top of the pods in high winds and rough seas trying to unfurl that tarp. I thought that would be a losing battle. A 40 ft wave crashes down on top of the pod and the helpless crew and puts 3 or 4 of them in the hospital.
The Captain should have said to himself: "I am such a bone head". Instead he is crying that fishing is a risky business blah blah blah
Love the show but this guy is short on common sense imo. Maybe put the tarp on before setting sail? Maybe before a storm hits? Maybe less pods? The steal pods would have ripped that tarp to shreds anyway. "In theory" this should work one of his crew members said. Instead it is back to port and to the hospital. No money made yet for them

I think I would rather go into combat with the Taliban, unarmed, than do what those guys do. That isn't fishing (well, crabbing), it is defiance of the Devil.

Don't know what they make, but seems to me that $500K/year is not enough.

That captain is the worst, nothing is ever his fault it is always something else. Another seen with him was when he was sleeping and the crew spotted some whales and didn't wake him up, he whining like a little girl.

There are a couple of the family run boats that would be more enjoyable to be on, but cold, wet, and tired are my least favorite conditions.

Ya that Captain is the worst. The Time Bandit family would be good. Sig works his guys to death. The Captain who had the blood clots would be good. Still, that would be one of the last jobs on earth I would take too. If the hard/dangerous labor don't kill you then a Rogue wave will. Freaky how the waves are bouncing all around above the boats. That would be especially terrifying at night. Would take some getting used to. Remember that one crew member who made them take him back to port? haha He was going to swim for it and let the Coast Guard pick him up if they hadn't.

Re: Deadliest Catch TV Show

we watched that show to

my wifes comment when they were rigging the tarp at the dock "why dont they just put it up now if they need it? wont it be a lot harder when there out at sea?"

then there was phils comment about them leaving port in that weather with that many pots.
any way we all saw what happened.
it didnt show them taking any more pots off while they were back in port to drop off there banged up deck hands either. all i know is what i'v seen on the show but it did seem like all the other captains left a lot of there pots behind on that trip

Great show. Every Captain and crew are unique. My hat's off to all of them. Not a job I would even consider. Nice to watch with a beer and the fireplace roaring though !!!

My friend's family owns a boat that isn't on the show.

Her comment was that it's hilarious how the show makes it seem so hard to catch crab. Apparently everyone ALWAYS fills their boats to capacity and it's not like a race to anything.

I like the show too. I have started to wonder if "drug testing" is required for the crew and captain. I dont think it is but maybe it should be. People that can work like 25 to 30 hours STRAIGHT without sleep just might be cheating a little if you know what I mean.

If OSHA rules and regs doesn't apply there, I don't think drug testing is neccessary. The summer between high school and college, my friends and I were actually thinking about going fishing in Alaska. We thought it would be a cool experience and make a bunch of money while we're at it. I'm glad Mary Jane made us not so ambitious and adventurous that summer. :D

I've been a religious watcher since its first season.. It amazes me that Captain Phil has had all of these health problems over the past season and a half BUT HE'S STILL CHAIN SMOKING!! Jesus, the guy was on the verge of death at the hospital and was sneaking outside to puff puff.

I really like that show, but having once spent a year on a ship of a little over 300', in similar conditions, I'm with JB - there isn't enough money that would get me to be an Alaskan crab fisherman.

That is all I can think about when I see him smoking. Probably contributed to his blood clots and he is still doing it. Narrowed his arteries....
Just think about the off season. I would probably spend most of it dreading getting back on that boat. Probably would have anxiety attacks haha Have to go to the Doc and get sedated LOL
As bad as the job already is, the crews make it even worse on the new guys(green horns) by relentlessly harassing them. I would have to go postal

They did explain that once, for a very brief few scenes with the Captains, when they switched from a "shotgun/first come, first serve" season to a quota. But then the last thing they left you with was Sig Hansen saying, "Yeah, but everyone still wants to get out as soon as possible and get done as soon as possible". So they play up the drama angle of course.

They do say the catch is worth more depending on the time limits set by the processor and the market. So many times it is urgent they fill the boats asap
