I am looking at a 2006 Boston Whaler 17 Montauk (freshwater, not bottom paint). It comes with a galvanized trailer a 90hp mercury 4 stroke. The engine had a new powerhead put on in 2010. The boat is in great shape inside (looks new). The outside has some spots that need to be buffed out but they are minor. Oh and it also has a bimini top. The marina is asking $11,800. I have looked around it is seems like a great deal but I am worried about the powerhead. Why would it need replacement after only 4 season.....

I would be wondering the same thing, however it may have been a factory defect, any history that they can share? Is there a warranty?
Some questions need to be ask before purchase if it were me.

I agree. I will defiantly ask questions pertaining to the motor. Overall do you think the asking price is fair?

Price is just a little high if everything is in fantastic condition. The dealer figures to negotiate so it would be OK. There is question on the motor,,, all electronics and trailer should be included.

The ones on BoatTrader are always priced way higher than actual market. Shop around on CL using SearchTempest and setting a radius you're willing to travel. Keep in mind there's 3 main iterations of the Montauk, the pre-76 (smirkless), the 1976-2001 (classic smirked) and the 2002 and newer (renamed the 170 with the Accutrak hull). Thoses are 3 different hulls.

It's not uncommon to see the classics (late 80's) in great shape and repowered selling for more then the earlier 170...

I understand why people like the classic Montauk. I am interested in this boat because of the fact that it is a 2006 and looks pretty new. I was looking around and they run about 30-35k new so I thought 11k is a pretty good deal. Maybe I am wrong, since people are saying the price is a little high.

If you feel good with the deal, that is all that matters. It's your cash!

Agreed. Looked like a pretty good deal to me, but it's your checkbook. I really enjoyed my "classic smirked" Montauk.
