Well i've tired of wrenching on and dragging around my 70s vintage fiberglass boat and motor .Heavy,heavy,heavy. Drug the wife out today on the premise of getting rid of cabin fever a bit. I went to a local boat dealer looking for a small aluminum boat, trailer, outboard setup. They offered a 2014 14 ft Lowe boat, new trailer and 2003 Mercury 20 hp with very low hrs out the door for 5500.I've never purchased a new boat before and at age 52 I believe (unless I receive a lottery windfall or unknown rich relatives passing) this will be the last boat I purchase.Any thoughts?

Re: Deal or no deal

I take it you are purchasing a new utility boat - great idea - this combination is an easy and inexpensive way to get on the water. I've had a lot of fun in a similar package.

The price sounds a little more than I would want to pay (unless there is a typo in your message on the motor year. If this was a 2013 motor, this price sounds pretty reasonable). I did a quick check in Minnesota for 15-16' utility boats with a trailer, and the cost for that package (no motor) was around $3-4k, depending on what you get. Here is a link to one. A new 15-20hp motor will cost you between $2100 to $4000, depending on what you get.

I was looking two years ago for a 16' utility boat, trailer, and 20 or 25hp motor. The prices for a new package were between $5800k and $8k depending on the package, and how badly the dealer wanted to sell it.

I don't know where you are, and I don't know your market, so $5500 may be OK - but I would price shop around a little to see what you can find locally. If I were in your shoes, looking at the last boat I was going to buy, and NOT wanting to have to fix stuff, I would be buying a new or nearly new motor. My guess is that if you shop around a little, you'll be able to find something.

If price is the main concern, and you have to keep the cost down, I would be more inclined to look for a second hand utility boat, and a new motor and trailer. An older utility boat that hasn't been abused can last for a long time.

There will be lots for sale, and dealers are gearing up for buying season, so look for a while first...

Doubt you will be happy with anything under 16' -- and bigger is better especially beam. I'd buy bigger used before a 14' anything. Just my $0.02

The cost is a steal. If that's what you want, go for it quick.

For me it would be an ideal second boat. Little too small for a primary one.

Does the boat have a steering console? I have to echo the above comments...... 14' is kind of small and the motor is still a 2003 which makes it 11 years old.

There are some nice small packages out there and it would depend on what your intended use is and where you intend to use it.
