Folks,

Any feedback or concerns when the dealer installed wrong plugs? Been running these all season, and seemed to be missing a little top-end.
I only found out when I was putting the boat away for the season.

Wrong plugs: BUHW-2 (non-tipped plug)
Right plugs: BP8H-N-10 (standard tipped plug)
Engine Model: 1995 Mercury 100HP

My suggestion would be to check what temperature the plugs the dealer installed were suppose to run at and compae that to the temp at which the right plugs run at. If the plugs the dealer installed ran hotter than the correct plugs Id take it to someone and have a compression check done to make sure it didnt get hot and mess up your top end,or make the dealer pull apart the powerhead and check the cylinders and pistons for unusual wear. Usually to hot of a plug will burn a hole in the center of your pistons, this takes some extreme temps but I've seen it happen. This is just my opinion.

OK Jake, did a compression test.
Looking good on all 4.
145-145-150-150

Good point about the plug temperature.
I'll do a little research on the two different plugs and figure out if it might haved caused a problem.

Anybody else got there 2 cents?

Thanks CF

Hello Jake.

I looked into the two different plugs.
It looks like the wrong plug is a much hotter running plug than the OEM recommended.
I will install the right plugs and hope all goes well this weekend.

I think you will find they are the same plug guys. Its just the one with no tip (polar gap) will last aprox 3 times as long as the one with the projected electrode. It will not cause loss of top end excetra!! At the absolote worst they may oil up with long trolling hrs at low idle more than the other plugs. Nothing to be concernd about I think the dealer is correct in installing these plugs as they are recommend in some mercury service manuals

Yes, definatly OILED up from long trolls.
I have learned to keep spare plugs kicking around in such an emergency........ fishing.

Thanks CF.

Re: Dealer installed wrong spark plugs

Hello OzzieBob.

Those plugs are recommened for some outboards including my 40HP, but it definatley does not appear in the OEM service manual for my 100HP. Nor does it cross to each other at NGK or Merc Dealers.
Not all spark plugs are created equal.
Just because Merc says they are good for one outboard, doesn't necessary mean good for all.
Heat disipation and tip lengths are critical to each spark plug.

I do not recommend re-engineering any motor.
That I did learn in my Outboard Repair classes.

Thanks for the chat .... CF

Well,if you ran them all season, and those are your compression readings, you've done no damage.

Talk to your dealer and ask him why the change, maybe a service bulletin or his experience.
