debris in leg drain hole in lower unit?

I have a 95 Johnson 25hp sterndrive manual shift and in the leg drain I see what looks like a tiny piece of gravel or something. It is normal? And how would I get it out if neccessary.

I also have a 9.9hp that I'm trying to get running. What does it mean when some fuel comes out of the leg hole?

If you find anything in those drain holes, you'll want to get it out ASAP. Keep those drains clear at all times. If they get stopped up and water sits in there, it'll freeze up and pop the lower unit housing, in the winter months. That will then create a costly situation for you.

As far as the fuel mix drainig out of those hole, that is normal, especially after running your outboard in a can. Out in the lake, that stays cleaned out, but in a can, it stays. The best thing to do, is if it creates a concern, just make sure it isn't coming from the gear case and this can be done, by checking the oil in the gearcase, itself. If the oil in there looks milkshake like, then you have a bad seal.

How do I get the debris out? Do I remove the lower unit?

That would be one way, or turn the motor up, where the stuff will fall out.

I had debris in my lower unit.....ended up being 15 pieces of pinion teeth!

Open that thing up and inspect before you find yourself stranded!
