Does anyone have a foolproof method of removing faded factory decal/stickers? Failing the foolproof thing . . . a less destructive method other than scraping would be helpful.

TIA

Heat. Hairdryers aren't strong enough and don't use a torch. Heatlamps work (slowly), but best is a heat gun used for stripping paint etc. WD-40 is great for removing residual adhesive without damaging the surface.

3M makes a solvent just for that purpose. The 3M item number is: 08984

Any auto body paint supply outlet will have it. It works wonders.

The sticker/decal is the easy part, The glue is another story. That's where the 3M solvent shines.

If it's been there for a long time, after you get the decal off you may find a "ghost" image in the gel coat (from fading/ageing), which sometimes is impossible to buff out. I would test a very small area before you commit to the whole thing, unless your going to re-apply a new decal over where you removed the old one

I have removed several stickers by using several application of "Goo Gone" (from WalMart). It is not a fast method but it works.

Thanks Fellas . . .

I plan on painting the cowl again anyway so ghost aren't any concern. This is such a big one that "Goo Gone" would take too long. I did try it under a corner but Its not aggressive enough. I get on the trail of that 3m stuff !! I have the heat gun plugged in and ready. LoL 8)

If you're gonna paint it anyway, I'd just sand it off...

Definitely the heat gun. I removed stickers on an old Polaris quad and it works wonders. GOO GONE is good stuff for the glue residue, but I prefer GOOF OFF (comes in a small yellow can. ) Basically anything with XYLENE in it should do the trick, but be carefull the vapors are very potent.

Hmmmmm considering this is a 2006 thread!!!! It would have been best to leave it in the archives and just use it for reference. I will lock it and let it RIP ;)
