I hear a lot of talk about decarb this and decarb that on this forum. I did a search and found 200 references. I am sure if I added an "ing" I would probably get 200 more. So if you guys don't mind me asking, what is this decarbing stuff and where canI get some. It sounds like something I ought to do to the old johnny ('63). :D

Re: decarb ignorance

Surge- you can use a variety of products...Yamaha Ring-Free...OMC Carbon Guard....Valvtect DeCarb...these are fuel additives that you can use different ways..that is - a 'shock' treatment or a constant treatment...if you've never decarbbed you'll want to shock treat then go to a constant use treatment

What exactly do you mean by "shock?" Excuse the ignorant question, but I would rather know than assume.

Re: decarb ignorance

Get a spray can of OMC ENGINE TUNER [decarbonizer] and follow the directions on the can. You'll see a lot of black smoke coming from you exhaust when you first crank it back up. This is the carbon being "shocked" out of your motor. May want to do the whole procedure twice if it's never been done before. The new TCW3 oils have been reformulated to help keep carbon buildup down, although some folks like to add OMC Carbon Guard to their fuel too.

Re: decarb ignorance

Surge- if you use a fuel additive type, "shock" means using 2 ounces per gallon of fuel versus a constant treat of 1 ounce per 15 gallons

Re: decarb ignorance

Decarbing is a 2 part process. One preventative, done by using a fuel additive to prevent carbon build up.SeaFoam is such a fuel additive and can be found at most auto parts stores. It works as a fuel system cleaner and should be used as a preventative maintenance procedure.

If your intent is REMOVE the existing carbon buildup from the cylinders and heads, then a spray decarb solvent product is needed. Buy at least 2 cans of decarb. Some people use one can per cylinder.

Run engine at fast idle, with engine running
spray liberal amount into each carb,
spray some more, spray a larger amount into carbs until engine chokes out and stops,
remove spark plugs and spray decarb liberally into each cylinder, install the spark plugs, let it soak for 1 to 12 hours.
Start the engine and run at medium throttle, or if at the lake, run it at full throttle. It won't hurt to spray some more through the carbs. Run it for atleast 10 minutes to flush the crud out of your engine. Now remove and clean or replace the spark plugs.
