Re: Decarb Optimax

yes
the procedure is in the service tech bullitens.
DO NOT spray liquid down the airbox.
the procedure ,from memory, goes something like 2 oz decarb solution per gallon of gas, mix six gallons of fuel in a remote tank and run until its gone then switch back to striaght fuel. but the procedure is in writning from merc you just have to find it. its in a tech bulliten and I have it someplace.

Re: Decarb Optimax

Somebody told me the best way was to put the spray thru the sparkplug hole & let it set overnight. Is this a good idea? Sound good, getting the cleaner right on the rings where the carbon does the dammage. Experts what do you think?

Help a newbie.

What does "Decarb mean"? Are you talking about removing carbon? If so, from where? Where did it come from? What caused it? Why didn't we have decarb problems 50 years ago when we didn't have fancy oils and ran leaded gas and oil was of poor grade and some of these engines are running today with no overhauls?

Mark

Re: Decarb Optimax

Texasmark, 2 cycles have more carbon from the oil in the fuel. The carbon buildup is in the combustion chambers,Pistons and mostly around the rings and in the ring groves. A decarb can help free sticky rings and improve compression.
Carbon has been around as long as motors have.
With cars in the old days I have seen people pour a Quart of ATF in the carb To remove carbon off the valves, rings etc. Hope this helps Texas...

Tim

Re: Decarb Optimax

We used to do that to our cars back in the '50's. I remember a product named Alemite CD2 that we used. Sometimes we used Caseite and other times just kerosene or diesel.

We'd pop the air cleaner off and with the engine at operating temp, pour the stuff down the carb till the engine gagged. Work it through (lots of white exhaust), revving her up so she wouldn't die and all, till the can was gone.

Worked good, but that was with leaded gas and most of the impurities in the combustion chamber were from lead deposits.

One thing I will give you . I remember when OMC first introduced the looper and the (only 2) wedge shaped piston ring(s) back in '67 as I recall. Merc and others still used regular square rings (3).

In looking at my '02 service manual the other day, I noticed that my looped 90 hp Merc also uses wedge shaped rings (also 2).

So to get the wedge to do what it's supposed to the ring has to stay active......and most engines are loopers nowadays (B4 the 4 strokers). Must be the logic behind DeCarb whereas the regular rings weren't that sensitive.....maybe, but I dunno.

Mark
