Decarb Question?

I plan on decarbing my 1990 Johnson 120 soon - first time. The problem is I need to use the hose and muffs at the ramp so the smoke doesn't kill my neighbors. Can I tilt the engine back up to bring it home (5 minute ride) to let soak and then tilt down again.

thanks

Re: Decarb Question?

I've decarbed and I've seen others decarb and I don't know why everyone on this board says there so much smoke. Maybe I done it wrong (doubt it).
Sure there's some white smoke but its not that bad.
I would just do it at home.
If you run at WOT most of the time there probably isn't that much of a carbon buildup.

Re: Decarb Question?

I can barely flush it at home without one neighbor threating to call the police and the EPA. I really don't mind doing it at the ramp, I just didn't know if it was ok to tilt the engine up while the decarb was soaking in.

I know what you mean about the smoke!! my neighbor thought I caught my boat on fire there was so much smoke. I bet you wouldn't have a problem tilting your motor, many let theirs soak overnight. A quick call to the local marine would probably verify this. Good luck.

Yeah, you can tilt up. Basically, you get the engine up to operating temperature, then spray in the decarb. I like to leave it in overnight, then put it in the water and blow it out. I have also found that if you put a can of SeaFoam engine tune(available at NAPA auto parts) in the gas tank, about every 3rd fillup, you will see clean engines and stable gas from here on out.

Re: Decarb Question?

I think it is desirable to tilt the motor up. The fluid will then "sink" (hate that word!!)to the pistons and do a better job of freeing up the rings. What do ya think???
By the way neighbor, I decarb in the driveway because the smoke clears before the boys in blue leave Dunkin Donuts!!!!
