For 1st start of the spring I typically pull the plugs and crank a few times to discharge any overabundance of fogging oil, put plugs back in and start her up.THIS spring I decided to introduce some Seafoam into the cylinders let sit for an hour and then start her up.I figured ,since I usually do a quick decarb during the season ,I would do it now since I have the time and since the plugs are already pulled. I will probably pull plugs again to clean the prior to launch but figured I would change it up this year.Last season I while changing out the fuel water sep ,I filled the new one with mostly Seafoam on installation.
Not certain if decarbing on a cold motor is as effective as on a warmed up motor? Charlie

Unless you do an awful lot of idling, you should not have a decarb issue. I use the sea foam as well, but just spray some into the carb while on its initial startup in my drive on muffs. Let it soak for a short while then run it again. My 1992 Merc doesn't have much buildup,

I am looking to PREVENT an issue. PM kinda thing. I had an issue with an old Evinrude some years ago that could have been prevented with proper decarbing. Btw,how do you actually know if your old Merc doesn't have much buildup? Charlie

I see very little black crud dripping out and little to no smoke when it starts from the sea foam. If the carbon buildup is heavy, your motor will look like your whole house is on fire !

I use a cheap Harbor Fright Borescope after I remove the sparkplugs. Plugs can tell a lot about cylinder condition.

The black crud is carbonic its dripping out that means you have carbon and need a decarb. If you have little to no smoke coming from exhaust using Seafoam ,that means you are not using enough of it. Charlie
