You will need seals 29 & 31 for the carrier, and oring #4 for the cap.

Before I bought the boat ,end of fall, the gimbal bearing all bellows, impeller were changed less than 1 yr..Wouldn't you think tech would have noticed this?

If there was water in the bellows, they may have not noticed oil or the oil hadn't leaked yet and the yoke may have gotten rusty. That in itself will take out a front seal. Then the rust imbeds in the seal and grinds the groove in the sealing surface even deeper. Then each time you run it, when it warms up it pumps out more oil. I see it happen all the time. Most just ignore the yoke and seal.

Re: decided to do it myself...lower shift cable

Hello again,
Took me longer than expected to get everything gathered up,had to wait for spanner wrench, but opened up drive last night and was happy to see evrything looked good.Gears in good shape.I did notice the small groove starting to happen where the seal seats, like don mentioned above,we smoothed it out pretty good but what do I have to keep my eye on to tell if it's shot?Keep checking gear lube?
Next up for today, lower shift cable and put it all back together.I bought the upgrade shift shaft bushing and the guy at the boat store said special tool might be necessary to remve /replace this is there another,or do I need to wait for more tools to arrive?

i'd think a pressure test would tell ya, or gear lub in the bellows. personally, if it had a groove in it. i'd replace it....

heres a link to the tool for the the shirft shaft seal removal/replacement tool.

Re: decided to do it myself...lower shift cable

Hello again,
Got the drive installed with no problems and tested in the yard and have to say A BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE HERE!!!!!!Everything went real well on this project. Not to say I'vr fixed everything and won't have problems ever again, but I am no longer nervous about doing the work myself.Next fall I will rebuild my drive(hopefully not sooner).Cost me under $300.I'd say I saved 600 in labor.
The drive sounded nice and quiet.
I'm droppin it in the water this morning.I'll be back and keep posted.
thanks again!!!

Re: decided to do it myself...lower shift cable

Happy to say my repairs fixed shifting problems, works great, did all adjustments per oem man. shifts fine in and out of gear I think the shift int. needs slight adj.cause I can hear engine stall for sec. then comes out of gear.It almost stalls then catches and idles, overall I'm ok with that,Ill tinker with it to get it right.
I wont know about oil seal fix till I pull the drive again(which could be real soon...read below)so thats that.
OK,fixing shift cable did not fix the no go situation.I can go 10/15 mph fine everything normal, as soon as I give it throttle something is slipping.I go back to neut.try it again same thing can operate at low rpm's but slips at higher rpm's.
I scribed a line on prop as advised earlier but suspect I did in the wrong spot.I'm getting a loaner prop today, brand new ss prop to see if that is it.
One of the I need to purchase is a new trim tab, mine is totally missing, was waiting till other more expensive repairs were complete before replacing it,is this being missing going to have this or any effect, on what I'm trying to diagnose?I think not but am not sure?I know it's a noob question so go easy on me,lol
thanks,Dan

Actually that's exactly what the shift interrupt switch is designed to do. It sounds like it is working perfectly. The engine needs to "stumble" momentarily in order to come out of gear.

The other problem... well, let's hope it is a spun prop hub. Let us know what you find!

Re: decided to do it myself...lower shift cable

Well I've been waiting till last to deal with this prop/no go issue I think someones prior mistake/my limited but expanding knowledge of boats is going to make this one cheap and easy to correct.
I noticed right away that the prop shaft nut had threads showing,I know should have sent up red flags long ago, took everything apart noticed tab washer missing prop hub looked ok, and thrust washer. Grease on everything like it should.I noticed the thrust washer wasn't all the way seated to lower unit.So I went in and went to mercstuff and found that I have the newer style thrust washer with an old style prop.In the process of locating the right stuff let you know if it was as easy/stupid as this.

Re: decided to do it myself...lower shift cable

Hello,
Just wanted to say thanks to all who helped.Repairs did the trick. This site is great.
Turns out the guy I bought the boat from was not honest by any means! The whole prop thing is a bit embarassing actually.I guess in an attempt to pork me for whatever he could he put a prop that was for a much smaller boat and it was slipping simply because it wasn't installed right.Should have noticed how small prop was right away...DUH
Again thanks for the help
