Finally decided to keep my 1989 Bayliner. It is unpopular OMC 2.3 Ford but so far it was really good to me plus it was recently rebuilt. I wish I could do it myself, but I do not have a space for it. :cool:DSC_0215.jpg

If you have space to park the boat, I bet you have space to rebuild the transom!

I don't think you're supposed to post offers to or the need for work.........

Since you want to redo it, probably lots of marina's in & around Toronto, or a boat club that might give you a good recommendation. Hang out near marinas & talk to some locals. Word of mouth in person would be far better then any via the internet........

And didn't you already post a thread w/ some details about $1000 repair prices you'd already gotten?

Take no notice of jbcurt, your asking for advice, not advertising for work.
Buckeye Marine in Bobcaygeon will do a great job (they were listed as number one in Canada last year for customer satisfaction), but they are not cheep.
They are not exactly in the GTA but it's not a bad drive.

I'd be interested to see what that quote for a new transom is... and then when they peel back the deck to do the transom, how much the stringer job is going to be.

If you'll read the bottom EDIT line in Bulbash's post, you'll notice that a moderater redacted his post:

removing the solicitation from his post, and leaving the remainder. Originally a solicitation was posted.

Thanks though.........

Yeah, I remember that one... must not have panned out. I wonder what the difference will between the 1K and the best in customer will be.

Sorry I did not mean to do anything against the rules. All I am asking is if anyone had an experience with such work being done somewhere... Can anyone recommend a place to do it... Anyone heard anything of Crates Marina?

Bul, this seems to be paralysis by analysis...

You want/need work done. If poorly worded originally, and asking if there was a local interested, indicates that you feel you've exhausted the leads you have already. What happened to the previous estimates you got?

Somewhere around here, there's another 'Need work done, any recommendations?" thread.... Where the original poster (OP) indicated that they intended to monitor progress almost hourly to ensure quality work. It's just not realistic....

If you have another marina, Crates, and the Voted Best place wrench posted, you may need to commit and drop your boat off at a garage. Just make sure you & the shop are on the exact same page about what work they are to do to fulfill the current estimated costs. How & what you expect if they open the hull & discover further damage, perhaps include a visual inspection after the hull is opened. And let them do the work. Then do your best to examine the work before you pay them in full.

In Toronto, what do you have, 7-9wks before you might really miss having the boat? Much less may be a challenge for a shop to do a thorough repair & put back, except for a 1 at a time, from start to finish, shop, which is probably more expensive then another shop that has multiple projects going at any 1 time...

No matter the # of great recommendations, the shop's reputation, and the # of Voted Best awards, sometimes, expectations & results don't match once the repairs are done. Just try to do everything possible to minimize the likelihood that it happens to yours.

Is it the access to the tools, a garage, time or lack of experience that prevents you from doing it yourself?

Some shops, not all, will work with you to minimize costs, if you remove some of the parts & pieces that impede the transom removal process. Engine removal & reinstall chief among them..

Sorry jbcurt! I stand corrected. It didn't read as a solicitation to me. And I didn't say that the job was going to be cheap.
Your last post sounds like excellent advice for him.

Re: Decision was Made to Keep Her... Anyone From GTA to Do a Transom Replacement?

After they put everything back together they called me and told me that my main seal (bellows) around shft needs to be replaced, they qoted me $800to do it. When I came to see what do they mean that what I saw. Rubber seals seems to be old and the edge is all cracked, no holes inside. How hard is to replace it. I can remove my drive, but I never took out transom bracket... 2013-02-28 13.05.48.jpg

Overall I'm very happy with the repair the only thing that worries me is how did they reinstalled everything... I won't find out until May when I will get her on the water...
