Deck Repair

I have a 16 ft bass boat. I replaced most of the center deck with exterior grade plywood sealed with epoxy. The cuts I made were not perfect, so there is a gap between the new wood and the old wood all the way around. I was planning to cover the gap with fiberglass cloth and epoxy. However, once the epoxy dries on the fiberglass cloth it becomes brittle, and I can simply punch through it with a fingernail so I opted to leave out the epoxy in the seam area and only put epoxy on each side of the seam where wood is. My dad was feeling the cloth yesterday and he said the fiberglass at each seem felt soft. He recommended stainless steel plating all the way around to go over the seam. I hate to do that because I worked so hard to waterproof and I would have to drill holes in the wood. Any other ideas? Any additives to make the epoxy less brittle? Leave it as is? The seam can be as big as 3 inches or as little as half an inch. I plan on putting 20oz boat carpet over top of everything glued down with epoxy.

We don't know what type or weight of glass you're using, but to span any gap you typically need to use multiple layers. Pics always help.

Did you cut your wood on a 45 to seal together.? 1708 fiberglass over top two coats. With resin.

You could also fill the gap with a thick batch of 'peanut butter' (thickened resin). Are you planning on painting the deck? Carpet? Vinyl?

Already ordered 20oz boat carpet. I planned kn pai ting at first but i figured that would show all the mistakes! Jerry what do you mean by a 45? How do i thicken the resin? How much more would i need? Thanks guys. Jerry you want me to use two layers of 1708 fiberglass with resin? What about bondo fiberglass cloth? Would that work as well?

bondo fiberglass cloth should not be anywhere near a boat, and neither should its waxed resin.

if using poly, I suggest a good layup resin (no wax)...... however lets start from the beginning. once you start down the path of epoxy, you cant put poly resin over it...... it wont stick. you also cant use cloths for resin with epoxy and visa versa. since the OP has gone down the path of epoxy, there should be about 3 layers of cloth used with such a light cloth.

in the future....prior to any floor repair, etc. I suggest reading the stickies at the top of the forum, specifically the 3rd sticky, and links 14, 2, 3, 4a, and 4b
