Re: deck replacement and more. 14'

got my deck pieces cut today.

4 pieces in total.

this was more challenging than expected as it appears my original fore deck -the bit of deck under the bow, was fibreglass ONLY (no wood)

i would have found this difficult to do, so decided that to put wood up there would be easier, and hopefully strengthen the wole boat.

opinions welcome.

Mine had the same condition at the bow and the way the plywood tied into the side of the hull I couldn't add plywood in that area. I ended up making a mold and foaming in the area, then glassing it. It isn't quite as flat as the plywood, but once I got the carpet in you can't tell. I'm sure the plywood will be fine, they probally just saved a piece of plywood when they orginally built it. Nice looking work!

thanks arch! good to know someone has seen this before.
im actually thinking waxing that bit off plywood then to laminate over with glass, and then remove it leaving just glass.
what you think. will be easier as there is nowhere for the plywod to actually rest on. it would just be hanging off the glass.

Re: deck replacement and more. 14'

that was more or less the same issue I had. my plywood deck sits on the inside grove of one of the chines. As the chine got closer to the front the grove disappeared. I should have spent some time grinding the foam nice and flat, but I knew you wouldn't see it anyhow. You could do that with plywood, or lay up a couple layers of glass on something flat, trim it to the shape of the hole, then tab it in. When you go over the deck with glass you could add a couple more layers over it.

got my deck glassed in today.
underneath the deck has 1 layer of csm 600g/sqm (heavy csm)
i stuck it down with a P/B mix of chopped strands, milled fibres and resin.
i filleted the gaps at the sides and between panels with the same P/B mix.
on top of deck has 1 layer off medium csm 450g/sqm so far. this will get another layer and then flowcoat with sand in it for grip.

Hey looks like you are making some good progress! That looks like a really tight shop space you have there. Keep up the good work!

Re: deck replacement and more. 14'

no arch but i turned the prop by hand when in gear and it feels ok. apparently it was running this April, according to the guy i bought it from. outboard engines are not as plentiful from where i come from so they are more expensive than is the USA. you will NEVER see one going for free like you have on craigslist so you kinda have to take your chances.

aussie g'day , i wore a full paper overall suit ,respirator with particle filters, gloves and old shoes. dust is a killer. it gets everywhere. good luck, keep us posted.
