Deck Replacement

Hi,

I have a 1980 Chaparral (Model 194) that has some soft spots and rot on the deck from the beginning of the livewell to about 2' from the front (a little new here to rmember nautical terminology).

Questions:

1. Should I replace the whole deck or just that section (this'll also be determined when I pull the existing deck off)?

2. Do I need marine grade plywood, or is there something I could get at Home depot (IE: pressure treated or high grade plywood)?

3. What type of screws should I use (IE: galvanized )?

4. Should I apply caulking as well when installing new plywood?

5. How should I inspect the transom and stringers to see whether they need replacing?

6. Should I caulk or putty where the new plywood meets the sides, before fiberglassing? If so, what type?

I am handy with tools so I am not worried about that. I am also fairly confident about doing the fiberglass work.

Thanks for any help.

I agree, i would go over the resporation area and start to read through what others have done. But if you have a soft spot, i would bet money on you having to replace the stringers. Good luck

Re: Deck Replacement

Thanks for the tips all. I have also watched several informative videos on "YouTube" on decks, stringers and fiberglassing.

And to think that I moved down to Florida (from the "Snow Belt" to stop doing projects!!!:D). Could be fun though, my way of relaxing!

Re: Deck Replacement

Ooops!

I was wondering about the type of plywood to use and whether it needs to be treated on the underside as well as topside.

Thanks.

Me, a newbie:D
