Rick I hope you didnt think I was bashing you for owning a Toon. I think yours is cool from what I have seen to old clapped out models sporting an old OB. Another thing that has steered me away from toons is they look difficult to launch from a Ramp.

Wow, these are some very bias answers. SO let me fill in the missing parts.
Yes Pontoon require more HP than a Deckboat to reach the same speed but Pontoons are only slow if you put small engines on them. Modern Pontoons with 150+ HP and strakes run anywhere from 30mph up to 70mph. A very few can hit 100mph.

pontoons are one of the most inefficient craft out on the water... It simply takes more power and more gas to make them go the same speed as a comparible hull boat (vhull or deck boat)

I didn't take it as bashing, and I have owned V hull and Pontoon and loved both. As far as inefficient. WE are all running some of the biggest gas drinkers available without a pilots License. The bottom line is Pontoons have a very large following and over the years have gotten a rep of 40hp 15 mph top speed slugs and that is just not the case. They are no harder to control, dock, or trailer than any other boat of the same size.

To the Op, test drive both and make your decision based on what works for you. In the end we are all spending time on the water doing what we love.

Re: Deckboat V's Pontoon Boat

I have nothing against pontoons, they just aren't the type of boat I want to own. As pointed out above, pontoons have come a long way from be slow, plowing party barges. I watched a fancy tritoon with big OB fly across the water. It looked pretty cool.

One thing not yet mentioned in regards to a deck boat is that they have less deadrise, i.e. shallower V in the hull, and can ride rougher than a typical deep V bowrider or "saltwater" style boat. How big of waves/wakes/chop will you see on the bay? If it gets choppy in wind or from boat traffic, you might want to look at something with a deeper V. But, the tradeoff is usually less carrying or people capacity.

Also, for salt water usage, make sue the trailer is galvanized or aluminum.

Oh nothing looks worse then a rented Pontoon boat with a bunch of people with Orange vest in Docker Shorts and Polo Shirts.

Now, that's funny right there!!! You forgot to include all the fenders left hanging over side the entire time boat is out on the water :)

That is where I was going with the Pontoons running smoother. My 30' Scarab Center Console cut Through the water and was as smooth as my Pontoon and would run 70mph. Of course it had Twin 250's hanging off the back. I test drove a deckboat when I was looking and in 2 - 4' chop we were getting beat to death. OffShore V-hulls on the other hand laugh at the chop produced on most inland lakes.

I am not pushing Pontoons on anyone and they are not the perfect boat for everyone. I have had Several different Boats and all of them had their uses. I do miss my JonBoat though. Need to get another one for fishing the shallow rivers and I have also considered picking up a Jetski when I get the urge to run 60 mph. :)

Whatever you decide to get you will enjoy and if you ever find yourself on a lake with me I have a Beer in the cooler you are welcome to.

hey now, I like it when they leave fenders hanging on the sides. I have found at least 10 fenders floating around the lake and of those 4 of them were very nice new 10" fenders. My fenders are off before I leave the NoWake Zone... Can't stand them hanging out there.

Re: Deckboat V's Pontoon Boat

We wouldn't trade our pontoon for anything. Does what we need. Its a cruiser that can handle the whole family plus a few. Will pull a tube or wake boarder. Big large deck on the front for the kids to fish from. Presently being setup to bow-fish and spear from. Can sleep on it, the front benches make into a bed. And when we park on the sand bar guess where people end up.. Not on their power boats. Yeah its a party barge thats why we bought it.. Different strokes for different folks. Thats why we also have 14' fishing boat and are building a hydrostream for those need for speed days.. Never been a fan of deckboats because they IMO look goofy dont seem to be as roomy as a tooner, but for all around speed and luxury I guess a deck boat would be the ticket

Re: Deckboat V's Pontoon Boat

So okay, here's a recap.

1. Don't get a barge. Get a deckboat. I heard from the internet they're better.
2. If you do get a barge, don't use orange life jackets or leave your fenders hanging from the rails while you're cruising around at 15 mph with your 40 horse wide open. And please, whatever you do, change out of your Docker shorts and Polo shirt before taking the helm.:rolleyes:

Now that that's out of the way, how about some actual beta? Just remember, our advice is worth what you're paying for it.;)

As rrhodes has demonstrated, the reputation of the pontoon boat as the old grandpa of the lake is no longer universally applicable, but it is still a boat that primarily excels at chillaxin' and family fun at a slightly slower pace. A properly equipped pontoon can easily facilitate water sports, but if you expect to do a whole lot of skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, etc., you'll be disappointed with a barge. Will it work? Sure, but that's not why the pontoon boat was conceived.

Now, as has been said, deckboats can be rough on the posterior and spinal column in the chop, so there's that to consider. If your crew is heavily into watersports that likely isn't as much of a concern for you. Also, a deck boat won't be as good for lounging as a barge, but will be no slouch in that category. So, if you envision a lot of lounging with a smattering of water sports, a deck boat will do but might not be the better choice.

Enough has been said about the physical implications of the pontoon design versus the displacement hull, so I'll leave that dead horsey alone. I also didn't mention the need to rinse the toons after every use since that burden is no greater than the washdown requirements of any other boat used in salt water. Man you salt water guys have to work hard to boat. Docking, launching and loading is no more difficult with one design as compared to the other. The only other significant factors are cost and availability. It's been my experience that barges in the secondary market tend to be a little cheaper and a little more widely available. Your experience may vary since Delaware is a considerable distance from Arkansas.

In my mind that pretty well sums up the difference, which as I recall is what you desired. Good luck.

And the lyrics.

I ain?t got a high powered motor

I don?t own a wake board

I have a 1970 martin guitar

And an outdoor carpet dance floor

I got burgers on the grill and beer on ice and ill probably seeing you soon

I ain?t making no waves ain?t starting no fights just crusin? in my pontoon

All I need is me and my girl parked in a cove

In the glow of the moon light

Making love on my pontoon boat

On a Carolina Saturday night

Wake uo in the morning hitting golf balls off the back

Just off the side, you know I?m doin a gainer, and takin me a lake Norman bath

I ain?t wearing a pair of board shorts, Wal-Mart suites me fine

I kinda like the mesh holdin? by balls, reminds me of another time

All I need is me and my girl parked in a cove

In the glow of the moon light

Making love on my pontoon boat

On a Carolina Saturday night

I can?t loan you a fancy ski vest but I got a couple of orange life jackets

I ain?t tying up with none of those pretty boy boats

I can?t stand that jack Johnson racket.

I don?t get in a lot of trouble but have had a few misdemeanors

Hell no I don?t watch racing no more it ain?t the same since we lost SENIOR

All I need is me and my girl parked in a cove

In the glow of the moon light

Making love on my pontoon boat
