Re: Decks and stringers

In a boat with wood/fiberglass stringers yes screws work fine in an aluminum boat with aluminum stringers screws or rivets.

Just be certain to seal up over the top to prevent water infiltration

it would be good to get some more opinions on this.

When you screw through its easy to seal over the screw but surely it would be very hard to seal around the screw going into a nicly sealed stringer? would using 4200 into the hole first do enough? im not keen on drilling into new stringers unless im sure?

Re: Decks and stringers

I used deck screws to attach my deck to my stringers. I predrilled, dripped poly into the holes, screwed the deck down, then dripped poly on top of each screw. I also plan on painting the deck, so the poly will not see UV and risk getting overly brittle. Ju st make sure you are drilling a straight hole and don't go jetting out the side of a stringer, although it likely wouldn't be the end of the world even if you did.

I think you can get away with just using 5200 or similar and no screws. A common practice is to put a couple of screws in just to hold it while it cures. Then remove the screws and seal the holes. Or remove the screws seal the holes and put the screws back. I definitely would not go over kill on the screws.

Can't not epoxy be used for this, especially if one is already working with epoxy?
