Re: Deer Hunting Rant

Here in MS they've been on a 4 point or better rule for quite some time. But now I think they are about to change that to 4 points on one side.

I hunt a lease from Anderson-Tully Timber Co. and they have their own rules for what you can kill. Their only criteria is that buck deer must have a 20 inch main beam length.

I've been hunting that same lease for over 25 years and have seen the criteria change 3 times in 25 years. Its gone from buck deer must be fork horned to 4 on one side with a 16 inch beam length and a 14 inch inside spread (must have 2 of those 3). Now the only criteria is buck deer must have a 20 inch beam length. With each change the buck deer have benefited and gotten bigger.

The research that ATCO biologists have done along with MS State University have determined that beam length is a better determination of age that number of points and spread.

Re: Deer Hunting Rant

but why is it perfeclty legal to shoot a 1 yr old doe, that weighs as much as a mid size dog?

I think hunters are too obsessed with bucks, I just want a lot of meat, buck or doe.

Re: Deer Hunting Rant

Many people here in VT (myself included) will apply for a doe tag which are limited by the state lottery. If/when I win I usually throw it away just to prevent someone shooting a doe. I am a believer that one doe equals seven deer. I want the population larger.

I sure wish they could load up some does in this state and send them to you Bob. In Ohio, certain counties will determine how many can be bagged. The last 2 gun seasons in my county it was a 3 doe bag limit. Most others was 1 or 2. Just wondering if your bucks up there need that blue pill? :D

we can kill more doe's than bucks up here, you have to kill 2 does for every one buck.

We have too many, and no one wants the kill doe's, cuz all they want is a rack.

Re: Deer Hunting Rant

We can shoot antlerless deer during any open deer season.

Mississippi BAG LIMIT:
Antlered Buck Deer: The bag limit on antlered buck deer is one (1) buck per day, not to exceed three (3) per license year. See below for description of legal bucks. On private lands, a person fifteen (15) years of age or younger may harvest one (1) deer with any hardened antler per license year.

Legal Bucks for Deer Management Zone 1: Only antlered buck deer with antlers of four (4) points or greater may be taken. An antler point is defined as any antler protrusion that would hold any size ring.
Antlerless Deer: The bag limit on antlerless deer is one (1) per day, not to exceed three (3) per license year; except that two (2) additional antlerless deer per license year may be taken with a bow and arrow.

Legal Bucks for Deer Management Zone 2: Only antlered buck deer with antlers of four (4) points or greater AND either a minimum inside spread of ten (10) inches OR a minimum main beam length of thirteen (13) inches may be taken. An antler point is defined as any antler protrusion that would hold any size ring.
